The reviews are pretty misleading
I was under the impression I'd have to do a lot more to this thing. Polish frets, replace hardware, refinish the wood, etc. Maybe it's just this one, but the frets are great. The hardware isn't expensive at all but I've seen way worse, all I did there was replace the chinesium bridge screws with some larger stainless screws and that fairly noticeably enhanced the sustain, which it has a bunch of on account of the neck-thru. Whole thing was dipped in poly and the wood is sealed, it's no flame maple but I've seen worse looking instruments that cost more.It was super easy to get set up and tuned, no weird random buzzy frets, and the tone is exactly what you expect from an active bass, although it gets a bit clippy when I run the bass up, not sure yet if it's my signal path or if I need to set the pickups lower, I'm still screwing around with it.Waaaaay worth the $200 tho.

A Project
This is a great value if you're looking for PROJECT to work on. As it comes out of the box this bass is bad. Very bad. Every fret on the top side threatened to slash me open, the strings were bad, all the pickups were misaligned, the tuning machines are all sorts of lose and the audio jack was very loose as well. Thanks to many other reviewers here I kind of knew that going in, though, and at ~$150 on Prime Day I figured it would be a project. I bought a fret file in anticipation of getting this. You may also want to get a fret/string/pickup height guide as well. If you want something cheap to teach you how to properly set up a guitar, though, this thing plays AWESOME once it's all said and done. I put 2-3 hours of work and care into it and it feels like a much more expensive guitar than what I paid for it. A true through neck, 5 string bass without an absolutely huge radius and some beautiful wood. Awesome if you know what you're getting into.

Don’t buy unless you want to do a lot of work.
Here’s the good I love the way the space looks. Here’s the bad: upon arrival the outer box looked good. But there was no protection other than gig bag inside the box. Basically the base was loose inside the box in its big bag. This is an extremely poor packing method. If I had to guess I would say that is how one of the controls was damaged. With the exception of some very small finish flaws the base looks really nice. The nut is cut way too high and will need some work to make the bass playable in the upper frets. The fret end are the worst I’ve ever seen on any instrument in my 45 years of playing. They’re so sharp he could actually cut your hand. The battery compartment was too small and would not hold my 9 V rechargeable battery. So I never actually got a chance to try the bass. I really like how it looks but it’s too much work. These problems are all fixable but I would not recommend it for someone who does not know how to do basic repairs.

I am impressed with this bass!
I am impressed with this bass! In spite of the title saying 4 - it is a 5 string bass, which is what I wanted. The body is Elm - nice and rare. The whole package is very cool - got a Bullfighter tuner (doesn't work so well, but whatever), 2 guitar cords, nice guitar strap, gig bag, and a tin of guitar picks. Nice little extra package.Love the laminate construction and neck through design! The truss window is also nice, so you don't have to take the screws out to make adjustments to the neck tension. 5 knobs - plenty to play with. The active electronic system has high output. The bass plays well, and isn't too noisy or buzzy. Pure bang for the buck! Well done and not low quality, like one might expect from such a low price. Love the Alembic looking inlays. To get all these features I desired - neck through, 5 string, active electronics - for such a low price, is very pleasing.

Nice looks and and model
Bought because it was a 5 string through the body neck and large type pick ups, I bought a nicer TTBN and converted to heaver strings and through through the body stinging. It took some skill and the body had to be finished and set up. It is the the best bass I have, I was going to do the same but the battery compartment was in the way. It came in its usual minimal shipping box with stuff strewn inside and one of the pickups had fallen through in shipping, If it wasn't for the battery in a bad place, I would of kept it but returned it and later regretted it because I found a way to mod it. These Vietnam basses are are copy's of hi-end basses with the some parts being cheap but for $200, it's worth upgrading into a custom bass

This bass is gorgeous!!! And it sounds mesmerizing!!!
So I confidently bought this bass knowing it was my second one (rosewood top bass first) and I knew I could trust them.Well, the main difference between this one and the other one are the pickup location, the rosewood one has them closer together which creates different tone... That's why just get both and you'll be happy. As any budget bass you should get a custom to know about fret leveling, trussrod adjustment, relief and intonation adjustments. Just Google it, what some videos and don't be afraid to try, they are budget so you shouldn't be to worried. Also big note!!! I wanted to use this one for lower tuning and as you can see I replaced the bridge for a top loader since heavier gauge strings at the bottom end wouldn't fit so expect doing that if you want to drop tune to at least A#. Again don't be afraid to mess with it.You can find a video of me playing it on YouTube as bluesoul zero. I love this beast!
