I was so excited to find Drop Dead Fred so my kid could see such a great classic. It held up over the years and she loved it as much as I did decades ago.

ITS AWESOME!
Drop Dead Fred is a movie about growing up as a empowered person in this case an empowered woman. The core premise of this movie is you must take full responsible constant ownership of your self and YOUR LIFE or else suffer the humourous and or disasterous consiquences! The main character now a young lady starts off the movie a child in an adults body. She was not a grown up in heart for she was not an empowered woman at all she was slave to her mother, husband and freds every whim for she had no backbone. She had a lamer playboy disrespectful skanktrap cheating husband who functioned as a father figure she lost earlier in life. She had a domineering mom who did everything to give her daughter the appearance of respect for her decisions in adulthood but in truth merely paid lip service to loving her daughter while ordering every aspect of her childs existence. From an early age the young lady invested all her pains angers confustions and child like fantasy's into a special world. These unresolved issues took the form of Drop Dead Fred this YES sick twisted rude ego-centric totally self absorbed endlessly playful child like being in a weird carrot topped male adult body. A child is not polite or nice their fantasy's are annoying and crude which is just what Fred was, I find his nerve wrecking style in this protrayal to be perfect and accurate.Well once her childhood inner friend only she can see by the way is rediscovered Drop Dead Fred is released and instantly takes the young lady in the picture on a mad childish romp through polite society. The moral of this story is simple you must always be master of your destiny or by default someone else is using you for their purposes.Once you are in command of your own life this movie tells you the most vital lesson one can learn. ENJOY LIFE AS A CHILD WOULD LET GO AT TIMES. BE REAL STOP CREATING ARTIFICAL WORLDS THAT ARE CAGES IN WHICH YOU DEPOSIT YOURSELF UNTIL DEATH. STEP OUT INTO THE WORLD EMBRACE FUN AND CHANGE BY THE SIMPLE ACT OF NEVER LIVING TO PLEASE OTHERS. HELP OTHERS LOVE OTHERS BUT LIVE FOR YOURSELF AND TAKE SOME TIME IN LIFE TO JUST PLEASE YOURSELF SOMETIMES. LIFE IS A BLAST.This film tells you that in childs play sometimes their is the greatest of adult wisdom. No matter how complex, intelligent and sophisticated the adult being their must always in life be room made for the simplicity of play. The movie shows that if the basic human need for play is not met consciously it will satisfy itself unconsciously. This movie just lets us have a histerically funny peek into the wild psyche as this mad romp to play comes forth to rescue the young lady in the picture from herself. In the end she finds her backbone and becomes an empowered woman.Trust me their is nothing on earth more beautiful to behold than a person who owns themselves because they are fully empowered to love both themselves and others in a spirit of unending fun and joy! This movie teaches empowerment in such a way that me a dull witted old thing me caught the movies empowering message real good. I like the heavy handed way it hits I understand bluntness and you can't get any more blunt or fun than this movie! This is the wisdom this movie shared with me when I watched it on VHS.

Good range of humorous styles, timeless "classic"
OK, OK, maybe not a classic, but it gets the job done! I am a professional woman, mother of 3, whose older children (now in college) loved this movie when they were younger, and now my youngest (13) begs me to rent this movie every once in awhile, as it has been a favorite of hers for years too.Now it is out on DVD, and as a birthday gift I decided to BUY the DVD from Amazon.com when I found it was available. The girls at the sleepover party will love it as much as my daughter does, I am sure. She has been trying to describe it to them, most of them have never seen it.As a mom I remember cringing the first time I watched it with my kids, shuddering at what might be the outcome if my kids decided to invent a playful, spontaneous, willful, clownish, annoying, but lovable imaginary friend like Drop Dead Fred. The antics he pulls are outrageous, but I found myself laughing along with the kids, it does get to you.Phoebe Cates is perfect in the role of whimsical Lizzie, somewhat caught between child and adult roles, trying to be a good wife, but eventually estranged from her dolt of a boorish, cheating husband (Tim Matheson plays the schmuck hubby to the hilt). The pain she endures from the broken relationship brings back the comfort of her childhood imaginary friend Drop Dead Fred (Rik Mayall is so zany and incredible, perfect for the role), who was there when she was young to soothe her bruised ego when her overbearing and controlling mother (Marsha Mason plays this role very effectively!!) drives her husband away when Lizzie was young, and Lizzie is targeted as the reason. As the story unfolds you can see Drop Dead Fred coming out as the brave side of Lizzie struggling to not buckle under the enormous hurt and pressure of the mother-then-husband queue of dictatorial people in her life. Lizzie's mom becomes more controlling in her attempt to help Lizzie win her husband back. You find youself cheering Lizzie and Drop Dead Fred on, even though he sometimes makes a mess of things. But is he just an imaginary friend, or is he real? Maybe he is, you will decide at the end of the film. This is a film best watched by older kids in a group, or younger children with a parent present to help answer questions and sort things out, just in case an impressionable youngster has trouble with any reality aspects. All in all, the film is wonderful entertainment.

A comedy curiosity
After the Hollywood success of A Fish Called Wanda there was a renewed appetite in the late 80s / early 90s that the top British comedians of the time could cross the Atlantic and be of appeal to American audiences. However, British comedy usually doesn't directly translate. Instead, a watered-down version of what made them distinct and different was created and the results spoke for themselves. Examples of films in this time period: Lenny Henry's 1991 True Identity and Rik Mayall's 1991 Drop Dead Fred. The result in this film is confusing and bizarre, a child's film with distinct adult themes and a narrative that creates gags from someone who is clearly in the midst of a breakdown / psychotic episode. It is worthwhile to note that after Tim Burton and Robin Williams past on this film, for a brief time it was meant to be set in England with UK actors for all principle leads. However, Rik Mayall, seeing this as his vehicle to jettison his stardom to the US insisted on a US-based film. Sadly, it only destroyed it. If nothing else this film acted as a ramp that made films like The Mask, possible. To give some context to my initial point and how humor doesn't translate watch the Rik Mayall TV show 'Bottom' that came out in the same year as this film. It's certainly not for children. RIP Rik Mayall -- gone far too soon.

Blu Ray
Was excited to get a blu-ray version of a film that my partner holds dear. Sadly, the picture quality, transfer and audio are way below par. As someone who works in film restoration, it's extremely disappointing to see that lazy releases like this are put out on blu-ray. On the positive it does come with some extras. But, the main reason to buy a blu-ray is for the film itself. Image quality seems at times about the same as a dvd, this has obviously not come from the negative, but it is also covered in dirt and doesn't seem to have had any restoration for this anniversary release. Audio is two-channel. If you are not going to get the benefit of HD in the picture or audio department, then why bother releasing a blu-ray?

The definitive release this film deserves!
Drop Dead Fred may have been a box-office flop when it was first released, but the film has achieved its own cult status from its various home video releases over the past 25 years, despite what critics may or may not think of this film.I'd personally say that it was well ahead of its time. It doesn't follow the typical Hollywood formula, which is probably why it wasn't terribly popular with critics. The quality of the film itself is your typical catalog release type quality. This is not a bad thing by any means, it's more than beyond watchable. Final Cut Entertainment have presented what Universal was willing to send out. No signs of DNR or EE, it looks better than it ever has on home video before, and it's unlikely that we'll see a better release any time soon, if ever. The only disappointment with this release is that there are no subtitles. One minor note: The back of the case says the run time is 95 mins 5 secs. I can confirm that the correct run time is 99 mins 14 secs. It appears that Final Cut mixed the Blu-Ray run time up with their DVD counterpart, which runs 4% faster due to the PAL speed up. Nothing has been cut or sped-up for this Blu-Ray.The newly made extras from Final Cut are excellent, lots of brand new interviews with previously unknown trivia, anecdotes, etc. from cast & crew members, and finally some deleted scenes that answer a lot of questions, such as why the table is suddenly broken in half during the Doctor's waiting room scene. These are sourced from a VHS rough cut, some do suffer from frame-judder, but let's not overlook the fact that they are deleted scenes.Overall, an excellent effort for a release that this film deserves.

Thoroughly silly film for the inner child in you (or in your life)
Although this is very slapstick, a real laugh a minute and thoroughly silly, it also has a couple of hidden adult messages which make it very watchable for anyone. The messages are that being in no relationship is actually better than being in one which is destroying your life and your confidence and the other is that you are responsible for your own happiness, and your own own outcomes in life; both of which are completely true. Both of these lessons are also learnt by Elizabeth Cronin (Phoebe Cates) the main heroine who recreates Fred from her childhood when her marriage hits the serious skids with an absolute grey squirrel husband (cute but full of pretty tales) Charles who is having an affair. Fred played by Rick Mayall causes absolute mayhem as only Rick Mayhall could and the end result is a film that really makes you think, see things through a different telescope and still thoroughly enjoy watching. You can watch this with children (some of it will go completely over their heads) and you can also watch it with adults. I also find each time I watch it that it brings out something from within me from my own childhood/adolesence that I also need to re-examine or address. Perhaps there is more human psychology to this film than meets the eye?

A very funny film if you like bottom then you will love this one.
Rik Mayall plays Drop Dead Fred who's Elizabeth (Phoebe Cates) imaginary friend from childhood. Drop Dead Fred comes back when she loses who husband and job all in one day. She moves back in with her Mum and finds the jack in the box toy that Fred is in, she opens it and out pops Fred. You have flashbacks on when Elizabeth was a child and the stuff she got up to with Fred you also see what her mother was like to her and why the Dad left.Fred is only back because she's lonely so he helps her try win back her husband(Tim Matheson) who is good at playing a cheating rat.A childhood Friend called Mickey is attractive to her but she doesn't notice she just wants her cheating husband back. Mickey thinks she's funny the things she does. Take the restaurant scene when Mickey joins in which is funny.Carrie Fisher plays Elizabeth best friend she doesn't have a lot of scenes but she is funny in the film. I couldn't see any actor other than Rik Mayall playing Drop Dead Fred. It's a shame that he never was a hit in America. This is a very funny film .If you want a good laugh then this is the film for you.
