Welcome Back, Alice 1

Well written and drawn but not yet surpassing Love Me For Who I Am
I enjoyed Love Me For Who I Am, a series that featured characters outside traditional gender roles, and so Welcome Back, Alice seemed to be something similar. It is well-drawn, there is some good drama, although I can't say it pulled me in like Love Me For Who I Am did. One problem might be Kei, who started out as a boy, but now dresses in female outfits and proclaims "I'm done being a guy". Kei has returned to the old neighborhood after several years and wants to reunite with friends Yo and Mitani. At a meeting, Kei puts the moves on both, making them uncomfortable. I think of Mogumo, the protagonist of Love Me For Who I Am. Mogumo could sometimes be a jerk, someone who sought acceptance as non-binary but could also be quick to pass judgement on others. However, we also saw an otherwise decent person and could appreciate their struggles and joys. Kei seems to have a sinister side. Yo is the young fellow trying to figure all this out and Mitani is a girl who remembers Kei as a boy and is having trouble handling this huge change. I will stick around for the next volume or two but I am not sure I will see it as equal or better than Love Me For Who I Am.

Lots of Questions
Shozo Oshimi is known for exploring the perversity of human behavior, and this is no exception. There's a love triangle here between Yo, Yui, and Kei, and the big question is about Kei, who was presenting as a boy at the start, returns to school wearing a girl's uniform and long blond hair, and rejects both male and female identities. What does Kei want? Who does Kei want? Is Kei just playing games with everyone? It's a great question, and great to see a master like Oshimi exploring it.

Quick read. Don’t sleep on this!!
This manga was phenomenal, and unexpected. I read the description long ago when I preordered, but the actual manga is outstanding. It bends gender norms and explores the world of sexuality. Unfortunately the one I received was damaged.

For fans of Love Me for Who I Am
Nice gender exploration, very pretty. Not for younger teens, that is, not something I would recommend to younger teens, although if they find it for themselves, that's fine; in the first few pages the boy characters discuss the best way to g et off.Very odd but interesting love triangle.
