Dried Minnows

Great snacks for my small pups

I had been buying another brand of freeze dried minnows (packaged in much smaller increments and at a higher price) for 5 years, but when I noticed the price rising continually over the past 2, I tried this offering by Amzey. Well, the cats LOVE them, and apparently see no difference whatsoever between Amzey and that former brand. And, since the price is far more easy on the budget, I have happily been able to give my kitties twice as many minnows each morning. (These are "Jackpot" treats, according to Jackson's ideology, so that a good price is a very good deal for both me and my cats.)

Not sure if it's my batch, not sure if it's my taste buds, but I opened these up and they smell like gasoline. There is yellow crust on them--which is fine, could be oil--but the smell makes me skeptical. What's weird is that the inside smells more normal, it's just the outside that smells weird? So not sure if perhaps something about the freeze drying process was not done well to make them like this. My cats would not eat them without some tomfoolery (masking the scent). They go crazy for other minnows, but I put these out for like days, or tried to offer these amzey minnows to them where/when they would normally get treats (going into the carrier) and they will not eat them. They both like food and are not generally picky, which just gives me all sorts of red flags about these minnows. I would also like to call attention to the fact that I've never seen these carried by any large pet store (PetSmart, PetCo, Chewy), which is probably an indicator that this is just bottom of the barrel feed that household pets might not find quality. I saw a lot of positive reviews on this, so I bought them. But now, I'm wondering where those positive reviews came from. I also have no idea if perhaps I'm insane, or if my cats are actually picky, but I can't return these, and I don't know how to get a refund. All in all a waste of money in my attempt to be frugal and save some more on minnows. Save your $12 or $14 dollars on churu or something instead and don't be foolish like me.

Apparently Mochi has a preferred brand of freeze-dried minnow. She did not share this information with me prior to purchasing. Here I thought I could save a few bucks buying these rather than the Petco brand, but this little shelter princess has decided that's an insult to Her Majesty and won't eat them. In fairness to the product, it looks perfectly fine, arrived as advertised and (to my dumb human senses) appears the same as the other brand. It's not Amzey's fault Mochi declined to keep me up to date on her favorite brands. Cat tax in the photos. She regrets nothing.

Half of them my cats turn their nose up to. And the other half they devour. So some of the minnows are not edible at all. I have five cats and if one won’t eat it the rest won’t either. Idk if they’re spoiled or a different type of fish. But half of them (at least) go down the garbage disposal.

I bought PureBites minnows frequently a couple of years ago. My dog at the time had a brain tumor which made her gain weight easily, but she needed a lot of treats for physical therapy. Minnows are very low-calorie. I broke them up into smaller pieces for more treats out of one minnow. These minnows eventually, slowly, disappeared from stores. My dog has since passed away, but I wanted the dog I take care of now to try freeze dried minnow. Now why do I bring this up? Because I got so. Many. Splinters. From these minnows. I never expected to get splinters from a fish. I even got a splinter jammed under my fingernail from one! I became averse to using them because of how often they left me picking splinters out from under my skin. It was really unexpected. I had never gotten a splinter from any other brand of freeze dried minnows, even when ripping them up into tiny pieces. These guys would jab me even if I tried to give them as whole fish or chopped them up with a knife or scissors. Great value for the price. Tons of small, healthy, songle-ingredient, non-perishable treats for a comparatively cheap amount. It was kind of unfortunate for me, because it meant even more splinters from such a large amount of minnows. I can't comment on smell because I tend to not care with dog treats; it's for the dog's enjoyment, not mine, and dogs like smelly things. I don't recall a particularly powerful odor, even for fish. The dog was also ambivalent about the treats. She's a dog, so she ate them gladly, but they weren't really "jackpot" level treats. The main reason I typed out this review was because it was just so weird how many splinters I got from these.

My cat is crazy for these little dried minnows. You kitty will love them too;especially if they love fish kitty food.

I bought these for my bugs. My isopods love them. They don’t stink (which is saying something considering I leave them in a moist environment for hours) and provide great calcium and protein to my little dudes. I’ll be honest, I tried offering them to my cats and I’ve never seen them more appalled. One visibly gagged but he sort of does that. Neither accepted it. I’d honestly be a little nervous about if these are ok for mammalian pets. I’ve never seen any of my isopods die, so at minimum they don’t have pesticides on them, but otherwise I can’t say I know if they’d make anyone sick. 10/10 I love my dubiously sourced dried fish, great grub for my pet box of dirt
