Great book series!
As a middle school teacher, I really like this series of vocabulary books. The words are categorized in interesting ways (for example, Words from Other Countries; Eponyms: People). The lessons are illustrated in a way that helps my students learn the words. And the last page of each lesson is always different: sometimes a puzzle, sometimes analogies, but always different and always something that kids enjoy. All in all, I am very pleased with this series.

a good resource, but too basic for grade 5
The vocabulary words on the cover include archipelago and medevac, but inside the book there are also many more rudimentary words. I'd be very concerned if my own kids didn't know the majority of these words before age ten. "Guidebook" and "masterpiece" are in the compound word section, "foul" and "fowl" in the homophone section, "thermometer" and "sympathy" under Greek. I do like the way that the workbook has variety and presents vocabulary in different ways. There's a tic tac toe antonym game, an explanation and fill in the blank area for eponyms such as bologna and tuxedo, and a crossword puzzle for Greek roots. The relatively few words that I consider remotely challenging include isthmus, tributary, onomatopoeia, snafu, and alliteration. This would be a fun book for a second or third grader, an ESL student, or someone in need of remedial help.

Impressive!
I am impressed with this vocabulary book. Each lesson is short, but full of rich vocabulary words taught in a simple, effective way. It has been a frustration free way of learning new words and using them correctly for my elementary age children. I have learned some new words, too! It covers topics as simple as synonyms and antonyms, and it goes as far as Greek and Latin roots and word parts. Definitely worth the few dollars.

An excellent guide
I would not just hand this to a student and tell him to teach himself these words, but it is an excellent guide for a teacher to help a student improve his vocabulary. It shows how words are related and how the roots, prefixes and suffixes give meaning to the words. I also appreciate that the book had determined the appropriate grade level for the vocabulary.

Good books to have
I have the grades 3, 4, and 5. All are excellent, as they start out with each word and then build up the complexity of the skill needed to finish the problem. There are matching problems, fill in the blanks, and also puzzles to do, based on the word. All are short so are not boring. I think they help build up the child's vocabulary.

Great content, horrible binding
Love the content, but hate the Scholastic books format! Evan-Moor does a great job of making the pages easy to tear out and copy in their books. Scholastic does not do that, so be prepared. I like the worksheets in this book, but you can't easily open the book and get the copier to copy them clearly, so you have to get them out. I ended up taking the book out to the sidewalk (at my friend's suggestion) and using a utility knife and cut through the pages bit by bit, then I used my paper cutter to standardized the pages to the same size so that they'd go through the feeder on my printer easily and be able to copy both sides. It was a lot of work and hassle. If I had known this before I'd bought the book, I would have kept looking for another option...
