Lightweight and charming
This is an enjoyable reminder of an attractive and charming film. It is a self- conscious reflection on French popular music, with nods to Bach and Vivaldi as well. Desplat’s score is inventive and energetic and pleasurable in its own right, divorced from the film’s images. Samples from soundtracks by Ennio Morricone and Georges Delerue are used and Grace Jones, Jarvis Cocker and Charles Azanavour are featured. It is all very lightweight and very listenable.
