Love Songs of Narsinh Mehta

I awaited the delivery of the Love Songs of Narsinh Mehta with some excitement. When it arrived, it's big picture book format instantly drew attention and I was curious to learn what was presented. The idea of inviting a contemporary artist to render some paintings in the well known miniature painting style of India's western region seemed like a great innovation towards encouraging new readership for this 15th Gujarati poet who deserves better exposure in world literature. The contents were mixed to disappointing. The translations and the paintings are average, the accompanying text marginal. The book appeared to need very careful text editing and greater depth in analysis. Readers may be happy with a book to display but not find much insight.
