Beats a screwdriver
So, I’m a hard head cheapskate and tried using screwdrivers, punches and an assortment of other “hard” tools for burnishing. Save yourself the headache of appropriately burnishing a card scraper and use this. Literally less than 1 minute of burnishing with this on my crown scrapers produced beautiful shavings instead of dust. I wanted to love scrapers but could never get a (appropriate) burr. I wish I had bought this a long time ago.

I'm still not an expert.
After driving myself mad using a screwdriver, buying cheap nail punches, and using whatever smooth metal shank I could find trying to put an edge on my scraper, I finally dished out the cash for a tool meant for the job. I haven't used it a whole lot yet, but I got an edge (sigh of relief), at last. I give this five stars because now I KNOW I have a steel harder than my scraper, and I KNOW now it's my technique, not the tool. The handle's comfortable, etc., etc., yada, yada, yada, and just having it in my toolbox is a sigh of relief, that when I need to, it WILL do the job :)

Soft steel except the very end
Mine is just partially hardened, the part closer to a handle is soft, but the other end is hard, middle is kinda gradient, but the bottom line is that just first few inches can burnish a scraper. This is fairly frustrating, ‘cos I was trying to make it work for a few years until decided to check its hardness today. Would’ve returned it if bothered bringing a file to it when it has arrived.

For me, a necessity if using card scrapers
I struggled for awhile to get a decent edge on my scrapers using a quality screwdriver as a burnisher. I know it can be done, as testified by many experienced woodworkers, but it wasn't working for me. I watched videos, read articles, and practiced a number of times. I finally gave up and bought this burnisher, and the process became much easier. I only regret not buying this sooner.Regardless of your method, do yourself a favor and watch a good video guide to sharpening a scraper to see how to do it right (e.g. getting the correct angle and pressure). Even better, make yourself a jig that ensures you use the correct angle every time.

Rod mounted crooked in handle
I read several reviews in which customers reported the rod was crooked. However I read more reviews that praised this tool from Crown and didn't mention this issue. So I went ahead and purchased one. Disappointingly, the one I received has a crookedly-mounted rod in the handle: I measured a deflection of 5/8 inch. Being new to card-scrapers and their sharpening, I have enough of a challenge keeping the burnishing tool at the proper angles for honing and turning the burr without having to compensate for 5/8" eccentricity in the tool. I don't know if this is normal so I suppose everyone just compensates for this by the way they hold the tool.

Nice Tool
I bought this to use on a set of cabinet scrapers. The scrapers have seen minimal use so far, and have not needed to be reworked. Hence, I haven't actually tried to use this tool and it may be a while before I do. I have no reason to doubt it will perform as designed.

Works great
I was using the steel burnisher that came with my knife set but was not getting good results. The burnisher actually got groves in it because the card scraper steel was too hard. The Crown burnisher seems to be much harder. I was amazed at how fast I was able to sharpen my card scraper; two perpendicular strokes and two strokes at a about a five degree angle and I was making shavings. I am very pleased.

Works very well
I have recently been working with card scrapers and love how they perform (when sharp!). After some time my scrapers have lost their burr and become dull. I tried using a hardened drill bit but it did not work very well. The Crown burnisher has a comfortable handle and works very well. I was able to get my cards sharp with very little effort. This is a must have tool if you are using card scrapers!
