You gotta play this!!!
The atari vcs is absolutely amazing!!! Atari nailed it outta the ballpark! The controllers and joysticks are awesome and the gameplay is dead on. The games are also great at a cheap price to buy in the online store and they are freeking excellent!!!! I give it a 5 outta 5 and 110% of pure greatness!!!!

A Great Console for those on a Budget
This was a great pickup and I have to say Atari has something really good here. In a time when video game prices are going through the roof, this is a pretty good alternative to play some great games on a console without spending too much money. The games themselves are indie titles, digital homebrew releases and a couple of collections of arcade games mainly. Games are generally pick up and play while there are some longer adventure based games. There are a good amount of hidden gems here and enough games in the store to keep you busy. Games tend to go around $10 to $20 a game. I would recommend looking a list of the best VCS games online to get an idea of what to start with, and then go from there. For those concerned: my experience out of the box was good. The console updated fine, did the BIOS update fine, and shortly afterwards, I was able to get into the store and play without any hassle. It seems Atari has fixed the issues at launch where there were problems upgrading the console. Overall, the upgrade process was longer than expected but acceptable enough where I was able to play after about some waiting.

A Modern, Small And Compact Consoles For Retro Gamers
Out of the box, you'll get a nice looking and well build console. It's underpowered, but we live in a day that dedicated new retro consoles and computers are a thing. If Indie developers want to make simpler games, then this is the optimal platform for that! With the console comes 2, alright controllers. They feel a bit cheap and flimsy compared to modern consoles of the day, but you also get the Atari Vault with lots of great games, and all on an Atari console. With this is is a storefront of similar games you can try. There is no AAA game here, so you'll have to be willing to search uncharted territories. You can also use this as a small PC console, but you'll need a bit of technical knowhow to do so, and you should upgrade the memory to do so. But there might be better options down the line. This console is for the ones who seek it out, like me. It seems the poor VCS had an identity crisis and that Atari are moving away from the idea, as a VCS 2 hasn't been announced in any way. But it seems Atari have done a good job of presenting the consoles, developing games for it and discounting the price more and more over the years. So it took a while, but I can finally say that I recommend it for quick pick up & play games that Atari excells at!a Who knows how much longer this will be supported and how the storefront will continue on, but maybe in this day and age with consoles, games and computer parts is getting more and more expensive, maybe this is the VCS's time to shine if the standard price holds it up at around the 100$ mark, or maybe that was the clearance sale for the last batch.

Love it
This is actually much better than I thought it would be, I had no ideas the joystick was also a spinner, tempest is awesome. The game store works very well and has some really good games on there, I also have Windows 11 on a micro SD that I use with a usb adapter with steam loaded, the Atari VCS even in 2026 is still fairly powerful. It's definitely worth the price and I highly recommend it, especially for any Gen-Xer's like me.

Love this thing!
Been after one of these since they first came out, so jumped at the Black Friday offer. Had no trouble updating this unit's BIOS, and adding an extra SSD. Just playing with the software atm, currently running Steam on ChimeraOS on the SSD, and Batocera (just original VCS roms atm) on a memory stick. Ultimate aim to have boot options and everything saved on SSD. Atari software is OK (and Ant Stream no longer appears to be free so that's uninstalled), but you'll get so much more from this if you investigate everything it can do ... there's lots out there, no need to be limited to Atari OS. Just don't expect a gaming PC running AAA games. Controllers are fine, but I'll be using a wired Xbox controller to preserve them.

Missed Opportunity – Great Looks, But Falls Short in Functionality
I wanted to like the Atari VCS. Despite the numerous warnings, I went for it, hoping for the best. As a collector of vintage consoles and mini systems, I'm used to quirks, but this one was a major letdown. Hardware: Visually, the Atari VCS is stunning. The console and controllers are sleek, well-designed, and it came in impressive packaging with the bonus of extra-long cables, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives ended. Right out of the box, the system struggled to connect and refused to play pre-installed games. After extensive digging through forums and user discussions, I discovered that a critical production issue in the OS leaves many units unusable at first startup. This required downloading and installing a rescue image via USB, taking hours to get the unit working. Controller Issues: Not long after setup, problems with the controller emerged. The modern controller misclicked frequently, and the D-pad was unreliable for basic left-to-right inputs. The joystick was an innovative idea, but its hypersensitivity made classic games nearly unplayable. Software: While the interface looked polished, issues quickly surfaced. A rogue mouse cursor would pop up randomly, button mapping for the controllers felt off across different games with no clear way to fix it, and the app store had very limited content. Hoping to salvage its use as an emulation box, I was disappointed to find the Atari OS was locked down, preventing this functionality. Between the bad controller, broken setup process...I can’t recommend this, even if the sparse game library isn’t a dealbreaker. Sadly, this beautiful piece of hardware ended up being a return for me.

Online guidance is near non existent, official website near useless. Fortunately there’s enough people with a clue out there on forums that have written instructions on how to do the more interesting stuff. Yes it, it can and does run Windows 11, and steam inside it running in big picture mode works fine - AFTER you have worked out how to put the modern controller into PC mode. You don’t install windows on the internal emmc or the internal M2 slot ssd if fitted. You install it onto an external USB device like an SSD using rufus, the windows iso and making it a windows to go image. It just works and boots from the usb device any time its installed. Plenty of older controller friendly games work great in this manner. You wont be playing latest and greatest AAA titles on this limited hardware but runs plenty of things just fine on my older 1080P tv. The atari side of things, games are limited in number, a few are interesting, definitely needs more games. Know what you are getting into, this is for those that like to tinker and don’t expect your hand to be held every step of the way.

Cheap and nasty. Fan is super loud, software is dodgy.. and I'm not sure Atari are even supporting this thing any more. Looking at the quality and amount of stuff on the store, I'd say Atari are either only just supporting it or ready to end support soonish. It's not good. The console looks nice, at least, but it's cheap cheap cheap. The noises it makes are horrible. The fan is almost constantly going up and down in speed and it makes more noise than any other console I have (including the PS2!). Joystick is OK and the controller is not bad for a cheapie. You do get a load of classic Atari games (though, note, no Activision or Namco stuff.. just around 100 Atari published titles only that they haven't sold the licences on), but I was told you used to get more games with it until Antstream Arcade starting charging for them or something. Either way, the whole package is not worth the sticker price. Maybe if it's on super sale or if you're a collector, it might be worth picking up but for the rest of us it's not a good console and I very much doubt it'll be around much longer.
