The programming is a bit ticklish (understatement)
The programming instructions are just fine. But you have to take the time to read them and understand the pattern of logic in all of those keypad entries. Here's a clue (I put 0000 as the user code, as this is the factory default when you first get the lock):Think of the "Kwikset" button as "ENTER". I will call it that from here on.Think of the PC (programming code) as a "key" to let you into the space where special "boss only" functions can happen. Every time you want to do something other than unlocking the door, you need to use your "key" to be able to do it. When you enter the "key" (by pressing 0000 ENTER), you've entered the "control room", and then you can do "boss only" stuff. Each of the ten "boss only" special functions has a number. There are ten buttons on the keypad and each on has a special function. These functions are:0 - RESTORE DEFAULT ORIGINAL FACTORY SETTINGS (only AFTER you have hit the "reset" button.*)1 - ADD A USER CODE2 - DELETE A USER CODE3 - DELETE ALL USER CODES4 - CHANGE YOUR PROGRAMMING CODE5 - ENABLE/DISABLE AUTO-LOCK**6 - CHANGE AUTOLOCK TIME DELAY7 - MUTE/UNMUTE LOCK**8 - ENABLE/DISABLE ALL OF THE USER CODES**9 - ADD A "ONE TIME ONLY" USER CODENow, pay attention to the pattern of keypad commands. The pattern is:0000 + ENTER + [ special function number ] + ENTERThis is the pattern to engage any of the ten special functions (see list above). If the function involves a number (user code), then you add + [the number] + ENTER after the pattern above* Resetting to factory/default settings begins with pressing the tiny reset button, which is on the inside/back of the lock, underneath the removable cover that you just lift up and lean toward you to release. It's in a little hole, so you'll need a ballpoint pen, un-bent paperclip, or some other small thing that can fit into the tiny hole. When you first press it, there is a beep. DON'T RELEASE IT, keep pressing and wait . . . quite a long time . . . until you hear THREE beeps. Then it's reset.** All of these "enable/disable" functions can be tricky, because it's not very clear if you have enabled or disabled when you key in the sequence. I noticed that the ENTER button illuminates green for enabled and red for disabled.FINALLY . . . there seem to be some really sensitive parameters with this little unit, when it comes to TIMING. If you key things in too fast or too soon, or too slowly or too late . . . it doesn't work. I have three of these locks, and they are all persnickety about the timing, but one of them is EXTREMELY persnickety. This leads to some frustration, when using a special function FAILS again and again. Until it finally SUCCEEDS!

Easy to Install. Easy to Program. Easy to Use.
I read some mixed reviews on this product that had me nervous about my purchase originally, but I experienced only positive results.I bought this for my parents house. They come and go a lot, and us kids stop by, etc. and I thought it would be a fun gift they would never think to buy but would love. I bought the product and it came 2 days later via Prime. The reviews I read were all pretty positive about the quality of the unit but were VERY mixed when it came to installation and programming. Some left paragraphs on how hard both were and you should set aside 3-hours to complete, and then other reviews were basically "Great! Super easy install." So I had no idea if I would be able to figure this out, I'm not super handy—I'm tech savvy so I figured I could get the programming done easy but the install I wasn't so sure about. But you know what? I'm in the "super easy install" group!—Hardware Installation—I installed this bad boy in roughly 30 minutes (I used a drill to screw and unscrew, so maybe add time if you're doing that by hand) and this wasn't a new door that had now deadbolt hole or anything. I was replacing a traditional deadbolt, basically unscrew everything from the old deadbolt, and then follow the directions to install this one. I knew taking the old one out would be easy, but installing the new one I wasn't so sure about. The directions admittedly weren't the greatest, but if you follow the steps (looking at the pictures as reference) and think about what you're doing it's pretty basic. Again, it took me under 30 minutes to install and I was talking to my parents about something while doing it.—Programming—Now this part was easy to me. At first it's not obvious how it works, but after looking at the directions I realized it's VERY easy to program. Simply follow the steps in the programming guide. It's basically your programming code followed by "kwikset button" followed by the number associated with the task you want to perform, then "kwikset button" to start the task (i.e add an unlock code, change auto-lock time, etc.)—After a few days—My parents love it. They thought it was cool to begin with but after a week of use they find it to be super convenient and useful. The only thing I with it had was a separate button to illuminate the keys at night. If you press 'Kwikset' they turn on for .3 seconds and if you press a random number you have to then press 'Kwikset' to cancel out what your typing to start the actual code. Basically if it's really dark you need to know where the first button is in your unlock code number so it illuminates, then you can see the rest. Otherwise it's great. For the price this product is amazing. Super nice build quality and works as it says.

How I programmed it that finally worked
DO ALL OF THIS WITH THE DOOR OPEN!Programming is frustrating and I own two of these. The instructions make it look like you should change the Programming Code first but this was an exercise in frustration for me so I did it this way with success. These steps are time sensitive (do each step in under 10 seconds). The FIRST thing I did was Delete Individual User Codes (the factory programmed code that is used to unlock the lock):Enter the default factory Programming Code (PC) 0-0-0-0, then press Kwikset (essentially “enter”)Then press 2-KwiksetEnter the default user code 1-2-3-4 then press Kwikset. At this point the factory user code (1-2-3-4) is deleted. Now enter YOUR desired User Code like this:Enter the existing factory Programming Code 0-0-0-0, then press KwiksetPress 1-KwiksetEnter your unique User Code (4 to 10 digits)Press KwiksetNow, with the door OPEN twist the latch so it throws the deadbolt into a locked position.Enter your unique User Code then press Kwikset. The deadbolt should retract. Now, change the Programming Code like this:Enter the existing factory Programming Code of 0-0-0-0, then press KwiksetPress 4-KwiksetEnter your unique Programming Code (4 to 10 digits)Press KwiksetYou are now done.NOTE: to lock the door all you do is close the door and press Kwikset, the deadbolt will extend.I hope this helps.

First cold day, would not work. Awful, unreliable.
I've been using this lock for a few weeks, and all seemed fine... Until we had our first -20 day. Wouldn't open, couldn't get the key in to unlock it manually. Had to borrow a hair dryer from a neighbour just to thaw it. It's a waste of money for an outdoor lock in Alberta.

Not Good For The North
This lock works fine in summer and fall but freezes up often now the coldest part of a north western Ontario winter here. When it freezes you have to use the key. I don't know if a name brand lock would also freeze. It was delivered on time and was an easy install. Other then the freezing issue it is a good lock set for the money.
