Read this before baby arrives
Good read. I got through about 70% to get what I needed from the book. This is an excellent supplement to *existing* training that you’re already working on with your dog. (I don’t believe this would make a good stand-alone training book for beginners.)I recommend reading this ahead of your baby’s arrival. It may help you mentally prepare, visualize, and establish guidelines with your spouse and household members ahead of time.Every chapter closes with a very helpful summary of key ideas and lessons that zooms in specifically on dog skills related to living with a child / toddler / infant. If you ever get a bit lost in the storytelling (as I did a couple times), you can always go to these sections to make sure you’re getting the gist and noting the most important takeaways.

Captures the complexities of life with babies and dogs.
I really enjoyed this book. It's a mix of memoir and practical training advice (clearly differentiated by typeface so you can find the part you want). I know other reviewers didn't like this combo, but it really appealed to me. This showed the complexities of behavior and the grey areas that arise when trying to make the best decisions for two very loved family members- even as those family members have competing needs. The memoir aspects showed how the author wrestled with various things, from the exhaustion of the newborn phase to making decisions about a dog with a bite history. It offered very clear cautions about what can go wrong, and then explored how the author confronted those challenges. She was usually successful, but there were a few "learn from my mistakes moments" that I really appreciated. Meanwhile, the training portions were straight-forward and clear.I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to others. It's easy to read and far more informative than the other books I've read on the topic.

Lots of good info, but you gotta sift through the prolixity.
Lots of good info. The author is pretty OCD, so there's alot of unnecessary info to sort through to get to the good stuff. Otherwise, a very good book. We were worried about how our sweet, but reactive to other people and dogs pit-mix would do with our baby that was on the way. I am happ to say that, this book, along with the help of our excellent dog behaviorist has turned my dog into a model-citizen, at home. She is improving by leaps and bounds, outside of the house, as well.

Wonderful reference - a must read.
This book has been instrumental in helping our dog adjust to the new baby in his life. Lisa's blend of a memoir and detailed training tips makes for an easy read that's full of great information. My copy is highlighted, dog-eared, and very frequently referenced! Highly recommended for anyone who is expecting or already has a baby/small child and is looking to help make the relationship between the baby and dog the best it can be.
