Smooth operation!
From out of the box to assembled and working took about twenty minutes. The instructions were quite clear, and only one stage presented any challenge (simultaneously securing the four slanted rods with the top crosspieces.) It is well made, simple to load (just drape the skein over it, much easier than the umbrella type) and the ball bearing base spins without discernible drag as fast as I can crank the ball-winder (purchased separately). The rubber feet and the weight of the base let it operate without "walking" or tipping even at high speed. The only "con" I can think of is that it does not fold for storage, though if you don't have room to put it away it is attractive enough that it could be left out on a dresser or table.

If you can keep it together, it works fine...
I bought this swift years ago, then moved and could never get it back together in a way that made it stay together. I thought maybe it had gotten damaged in the move, so I bought a 2nd one. I used it ok but from time to time one of the dowels would fall out in the middle of winding a skein. I moved again and can't get the darn thing back together in a way that it will stay together. The ball bearing motion was really smooth and kept up with my electric winder nicely, but the falling dowels are frustrating. I will not be buying a 3rd.

Don't waste your time or money
This product was a sham. I've been using my plastic umbrella swift for 40 years and thought I'd treat myself to a lovely maple one. Wrong! The wood wasn't finished and many of the parts needed at least 2 more levels of sanding. The ball bearings were wobbly and, even after taking apart the section that was pre-assembled, the piece was so insecure that as soon as it got up a head of steam with my ball winder the skein of yarn flew right off the top tangling to the point of nearly being unusable. What a mess!

Finicky assemblage
My sister in law gave me this used as a late Christmas present and I was able to reassemble it today.Assembly is fairly simple but I did find that I needed to place the dowels in a certain order. If I didn’t put them in a certain way they just fell right out. It took me a little while to figure out which dowel had to go where but it currently seems that I have them in a sturdy order.

Love this,
Would give it 5 stars except the wooden dowels were splintered and I had to replace them. The swift rotates smoothly and is super easy to use. Just need to find a space to store it. I paired it with a Royal ball winder and they work great together. If you're looking for a yarn swift, you won't grow wrong with this one!

I love the look of this swift
I have only tried to use this once. I love the look of this swift, it goes together easily......but.... the dowels are rough, very rough, I tried to use it for 400 yards of silk yarn, the swift is too big for the 400 yards, when I went to take the yarn off 3 of the dowels the yarn snagged badly, now the yarn is a big tangled mess, it's going to take sometime to untangle the mess.***** UPDATE***** I measured the yarn that got messed up on the swift because I had to cut a knot out and the yarn was 120 yards not 400,( I looked at the label it's 4 skeins of aprox 125 yards for aprox total of 450 to 500 yards) so 400 should fit on the swift well. Sorry about that mistake
