I'm Here - Compassionate Communication in Patient Care

Opened my eyes
The author describes his ordeal, and I am grateful to be allowed to read his words. I am grateful his mind was spared, and that he is now devoting his life to helping others, both in the care and for those in the unfortunate position he was in--and is still in, in ways. I have not had to endure anything like what the author has; I hope to not to. I bought this book following a very near miss in traffic that could have been brutally tragic.

"Was Blind But Now I SEE...."
For all the "wounded healers" who end up working and standing by the bedsides of the sick and the broken, this book is incredibly valuable. This book is a first-person account by a man who was blinded and burned in a horrible automobile accidentIt talks about staying in the moment with another person. I used to work in oncology and it took me awhile to finally figure out my mission was not to "help" anyone, but just to be in the present with them. From there, the two of you can face what needs to be faced and do what needs to be done. This book is a first-person account by a man who was blinded and burned in a horrible automobile accident. His well-written descriptions of how it felt to be in the dark while health care workers, family and friends were trying their level best to do the right thing. This is a book that every social worker and hospital workers needs to keep close by.

Inspiring !
Thank you for such a well written book from the perspective of the patient. It really underscores the importance of good communication between health care providers and their patients. I'm so glad you've recovered!

This Book was so Helpful
I was assigned to read this book for my nursing leadership class but didn't get the chance to do it. I just finished reading and I must say, I really enjoyed this book. It gives you really good tips on patient care and communication. I highly recommend this book; going to read Mr. Engel's other work.

remember the patient.....
Nice (short) book written by a patient. I gave it as a gift to my granddaughter who plans to go to school to become a RN. I read it and felt it helped the reader see the importance of empathy.

Good Read
I purchased this book with "The Other End of the Stethoscope" while some of it was (admittedly) repetitive of the previous book, it was so important to repeat. Helping medical professionals to better understand the patient's perspective can never be overstated.

insightful
This book is a good look at simple, every day interaction that make a difference in the lives of others. It is a good reminder of what the nurses roles are for the patients, rather than just as a medical professional. It was all very real, and raw. The emotion is a reminder that patients are hurting in more ways than physically. Thank you for a good read.
