"If Laura Ingalls Wilder had lived in Alaska, she might have written this novel . . ."-- Kirkus Reviews It's 1934, and times are tough for Trip's family after the mill in their small Wisconsin town closes, leaving her father unemployed. Determined to provide for his family, he moves them all to Alaska to become pioneers as part of President Roosevelt's Palmer Colony project. Trip and her family are settling in, except her mom, who balks at the lack of civilization. But Trip feels like she's following in Laura Ingalls Wilder's footsteps, and she hatches a plan to raise enough money for a piano to convince her musical mother that Alaska is a wonderful and cultured home. Her sights set on the cash prize at the upcoming Palmer Colony Fair, but can Trip grow the largest pumpkin possible--using all the love, energy, and Farmer Boy expertise she can muster? Review: A great book - This book was so fun. We did it with my daughter’s book club and they all enjoyed it (11-13 year olds). They all have read and enjoyed the little house on the prairie series and we loved all of the reference to the books. Made it even more interesting when we realized that some of the people and places were based on fact. Review: Lovely, uplifting story! - This is such a fun book! It's a glimpse into the past, that highlights the present. It's written in an easy language, and it paints a vivid portrait of a life we all want to live. Thank you Carol! I'm waiting for Grandmother and Mr. Crawfords story now! Please finish it....

We love this Family Book Club book!
Fantastic storyline, great characters, really history to follow outside of the book, recipes to try, geography to introduce....overall as a homeschooling mommy I love this book! My kids beg for more chapters every time we read it! I don’t want this book to end! We got it to follow the Read Aloud Revival book club and are so excited to read more from this author!

Fun historical fiction and worthwhile read
From my 10-year-old: This book is set during the great depression. It's like American Girl and centers around a 12-year-old girl who's family is forced to move to Alaska when they can't afford to stay in their home of Little Bear Lake, Wisconsin. Leaving her best friend Ilene behind, Terpsichore Johnson is hesitant about life in Alaska. But she makes two new friends, Mendel and Gloria, and things turn out okay. But Terpsichore's mother, Cleo, wants to move back from Alaska, and it will take Terpsichore's greatest plan yet to convince her to stay. This is an amazing read. I've heard it twice, and there are plenty of likeable characters and fun plotlines in different chapters, although the book follows one loose story.
