Surviving in the Theatre: A Biography of Michael Wheatley-Ward

An Excellent Read
As a huge Theatre Fan, I could not wait to get my hands on this book. If I am honest though, I have gone slightly off reading autobiographies as they tend to start well and peter out very quickly, even get a bit boring ! Well, this is such a good read. I could not put it down and was shocked when I realised I was on page 60.It is very well written and Michael Flagg has certainly done Michael Wheatly Ward proud. You learn such a lot about the old London Theatres, all so interesting and of course Michael's career and achievements through his ups and downs, makes him truly amazing.I worked with Michael at the Theatre Royal Margate for five years. During that time he totally changed the theatre that I had come to know and love. Everything was so carefully planned. New seating, decorating inside and then outside. When the carpets arrived we were enthralled with the delightful colours up the fleeting staircase. He really did such a great job in creating a theatrical atmosphere giving the theatregoer a great night out. Nothing is as good as live theatre and the shows and plays were excellent. It was such a shame when it all came to an end and I was quite shocked as at the that time, working in the box office, if a new brochure came out and especially panto time, I would take £2,000 each day in box office seats. We had a real good following, but sadly no more. This book is a delightful read , if you love theatre you will love it too.

Great insight into theatre life.
I enjoyed reading about how it all works behind the scenes and the complexities of 'getting the show on the road'.
