Nathaniel Hawthorne's Tales: A Norton Critical Edition (Norton Critical Editions)

Makes contemporary writes appear weak and old hat
Every story comes alive. I can picture who and what he describes. As with all writing, I try to pick up on foreshadowing to help me see where we are going with a story. Hawthorne may take you down an expected path but it never leads where you thought you were going to go.Having read about half the stories thus far, my favorites are Young Goodman Brown (I walked away with a completely different idea of what the story was about than what some of the loftiest of critics think) and Earth's Holocaust (brilliant perception and fabulous balance of pros and cons of ridding the earth of things which some believe causes all the pain and suffering while others believe they are the source of its greatest joys and pleasures. I loved how the Bible would not burn and Shakespeare was believed to have survived, how alcohol and weapons were both reviled and validated.),The footnotes are incredibly helpful in understanding context, culture, history, etc. The letters and contemporary criticisms add to the experience. As with all good writing (and movies), I think of the stories for many days and weeks after I finish them.

Norton Shines Again
Another excellent "Norton Critical Edition." I love the layout of these books. This is my sixth or seventh Norton Critical Edition and the quality is equally as good. I love to be able to read the primary work along with contemporary and modern critics. It's great for university/educational reading and pleasure reading. Highly recommended for fans of literature.

typeface is quite small for such dense literature.

Best Shortstories ever
Hawthorne is, in my opinion, one of this country's most under-rated authors. This collection of short stories is an absolute delight, written by a master.

Undone by the editor
Hawthorne is a must-read for those who want to understand America, and this edition has many of his fine stories. It also includes a good selection of influential essays about Hawthorne, including one by Borges.Unfortunately, the editor is a bit of an ass. He has diced up all of the critical essays, so you only get to read about two-thirds of Borges' masterpiece. He also doesn't seem to like Hawthorne very much, and the editorial footnotes to Hawthorne's stories (some of which are thoroughly unnecessary) are used to attack Hawthorne and make cynical comments about Puritan society. Is this really what passes for scholarship in the American academy these days?

Commentaire
Je ne suis pas particulièrement fan de Nathaniel Hawthorne, c'est une lecture pour les cours mais ces nouvelles ont le mérite d'être courtes. Un bon investissement pour ceux qui s'intéressent au romantisme américain.

Very Interesting Book...
Libro molto interessante, ordinato in quanto in programma per un esame universitario ma adatto a chiunque, anche al di fuori di corsi di studio, voglia avvicinarsi a uno scrittore come Nathaniel Hawthorne per una lettura non superficiale. Note curate, reparto saggistico nella seconda metà del libro interessante quanto i racconti stessi. Consegna rapida la ciliegina sulla torta

Ottimo
Questa edizione critica in lingua originale è la più completa in assoluto per quanto riguarda i racconti brevi di Hawthorne. La consiglio a tutti gli appassionati di letteratura angloamericana.
