they work
By far the weakest link in my nymphing system is the 4x or 5x knot at the tippet ring. I think they must be a bit sharp compared to the hook eye. I've tried it with both a uni knot and a clinch. When snagged on the bottom, the tippet breaks at this ring rather than at the hook. I haven't broken it off on a fish, however, including up to 21" so they work.
