Well. What can I say? I've seen the comments on Amazon (90% positive) and the Rough Guide to Pink Floyd (ridiculous) and I will say this: This is THE definitive Floyd album.I've heard them all over the last 20 years, from Syd to Roger to Dave. I love Roger and his work but I always come back to this one. It's not only a great career summary - it also contains undeniably definitive performances of most of the great Floyd back catalogue. If you're a fan of Dave Gilmour and his magic guitar you'll love the live versions of the Lapse/Bell tracks, which all rip s**t out of the studio originals (especially Coming Back to Life, which was a favourite Floyd track of mine until I heard this, which elevated it to favourite track of all time) Comfortably Numb is certainly not bettered anywhere else on official record and neither is Shine On in my opinion. I've seen a few reviews saying newcomers should listen to this album first and ignore Echoes (the Best of Pink Floyd) and I will whole-heartedly join them in championing this truth. One final note - High Hopes was the best closing track of any Floyd album, giving you goose pimples every time - on here it will give your goose pimples goose pimples.

Having read some of the reviews on this album, I thought I'd add my own. I just bought this album on VINYL, (as it was the most expensive)! I am a Floyd Freak, and in the last throes of trying to get ALL originals on VINYL, with a lot of success, (I do have them on Cd's too, & a lot more besides, bootlegs (!!) & Floyd members' solo releases).Anyone with any knowledge of how PROPER music should be played should buy this to hear how music should be played "live". Buy the DVD & you will be blown away with the expertise of the musicianship & all the emotion of a quite BRILLIANT concert.Even I, who's been a fan for quite some time, was blown away by the sheer excellence of this collection, though I think they should have played Echoes, (would have added 30 minutes to the album/concert, nothing wrong with that)! From DSOTM - The Division Bell are all covered here, with only 1 earlier track Astronomy Domine, which even that is played with gusto. Buy this album without trepidation of "will it be any good"? A fantastic live compilation, by one of the best groups to come out of the UK.

The original studio tracks are better than these live versions
A live album can contain a degree of excitement that a studio album often fails to achieve. In the case of a band like Pink Floyd, whose studio albums from Dark Side of the Moon onwards were perfected to such a high degree, it is impossible to achieve the same standard of perfection live. The answer to this for a live audience is to add lighting and stage effects. A sound recording misses this trick. Another response to the problem can be for the band to give the audience something different sonically - different versions of the tracks, guest musicians etc. This album's problem lies with the fact that the Floyd have attempted to get as close to the original sound as possible but without achieving it. So, don't bother.

Epic!
I'm not really a Floyd fan, however I grew up listening to my Dad playing them and so I fancied a punt on a 'greatest hits' and after reading some reviews, I went for this one.It really is a great album - verging on the 'Epic' - especially when played at volume on a decent system. The songs speak for themselves and any Floyd fan will know them better than I, but when played live they just have a quality about them that you can't help get drawn in to. 'Time' is a favourite of mine - great lyrics and a great arrangement, but 'Wish You Were Here' also stands out - after the enveloping wall of sound of the previous tracks - this one kicks off with just Dave & his acoustic guitar, with the audience singing along giving a really intimate feel to this track. All in all, this is one of the best live albums I've ever heard and would recommend it to any music fan - brilliant.

Getting to know Floyd (various era's of Pink Floyd performed live)
To hear (or see the dvd) the most talented rock/balad composers in recent memory perform this material as though they were in a studio is absolutely mind blowing. The scope of the stage is HUGE. All tracks have been unchanged to resemble the albums from which they were taken. To perform these with the same perfection employed in their conception before tens of thousands of people just hasn't been matched by any contemporary artist since. The compilation also has a very thorough booklet to accompany the discs.
