Sandy Collora is perhaps best known as the man who directed the cult short film Batman: Dead End, praised by Kevin Smith as possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made , albeit before the Nolan era. Now, seven years later, Collora has thrown off the shackles of his short film career with the release of his debut feature film Hunter Prey, a science fiction spectacular with the same heart and soul as the glorious Sci-fi of the mid 1980 s. the much-celebrated director and FX designer has his DVD debut December 2010

Solid low-budget sci-fi
A prison ship breaks up in the atmosphere of an alien world and the remaining crew hunts the escaped prisoner. The plot twists and turns, flipping our sympathies and expectations along the way.The characters get us involved and have nice arcs as the story progresses, giving us more and more information along the way about who they are and what has put them on this desert rock of a planet. The character work by the actors is great, making the most of the opportunities even through heavy prosthetics in some cases. For fans of science fiction films the plot points can be a bit derivative causing the viewer to draw comparisons to many other films and tv shows but as a whole it presents a new take on those elements. The costumes and design work are the same, baring similarities to what you've seen before and drawing on pop culture, but clearly not intending to knock off their predecessors. This is the feature directorial debut from Sandy Collora (look up his amazing short film Batman: Dead End.) For a first outing it's solid, though the pacing lags a bit at times. Ultimately the real limiting factor on the film is the incredibly shoestring budget. The limited CG is where this really shows, as the costumes, make-up and cinematography are all excellent. Collora's work brings a cohesive vision to the world he has created leaving me wanting more. I would have loved to see a fuller, richer world with more characters but the lacking budget serves to keep us focused on the few characters we do meet.Overall this is a pretty good low budget sci-fi film, much better than you'd get from the typical made for cable movie and worth a look. The DVD has some nice bonus features including a commentary and making of which are both worthwhile.

Surprisingly good, entertaining, "classic" feeling Sci-Fi.
I originally found this on NetFlix (it has since disappeared from their library) and was delightfully surprised at how well done it was for its low budget. The story, while relatively simple, is entertaining with an interesting twist. You won't find stunningly amazing special effects here, nor highly fast paced action, like any other modern Sci-Fi movie (i.e. IronMan, Transformers, Avengers, etc.) It may feel slow at times, and it may even seem predictable in a couple places. I find it sad that these factors have come to dominate the determination of what is or is not a "good" movie, as I think this movie proves that with a good story and good acting, supposed "detractors" such as these don't mean squat! Sometimes, it feels good to slow down the pace and go back to the roots of a genera.I won't be writing a synopsis here...I think you need to watch the movie and enjoy it for what it is, without knowing what the movie is all about, how and when plot twists occur, or how it concludes. Great movie with a good classic Sci-Fi feel...if your a fan of that, you won't be disappointed!

"Best Movie you've Never Seen"
"Hunter Prey" is one of those examples of a movie that does so much with so little (budget).Without giving away spoilers, it is full of twist after twist after twist. The acting is top notch, I'm not familiar with the actors but they did a fantastic job. I saw this movie very early in the morning on cable and could not forget it. I have never seen it on any other medium, Netflix, Hulu, anything. I finally decided to just purchase it because I wanted to watch it again. I almost never purchase DVDs anymore but this one I had to buy.If you want to see a hidden sci-fi gem, check out this "Best Movie you've Never Seen".

Excellent movie! Arrived damaged (not new)
This movie is excellent and well worthy of owning this one for sure, it took me forever to find it; only complaint is that it was sold as “new” and arrived crushed and ripped, obviously not new. Purchase was refunded quickly.

Should be a classic
I accidentally stumbled upon this film one late night on Showtime. I saw thirty seconds of it and was captivated by the look and feel of these "BOBA FETTS" roaming a barren wasteland. I couldn't turn it off, even though I'd missed the first fifteen minutes of it. Days later I still couldn't get this movie out of my head so I ordered the DVD from Amazon and watched it as soon as it came in. The next night I watched it again with the Director's commentary turned on. It was an awesome experience. The look of the characters feel like they dropped out of STAR WARS, the pacing and landscapes and tight shots on the faces make it feel like Sergio Leone. It's such a simple concept. What's amazing is that the filmmakers put this together on a shoestring budget. You can tell there's a lot of love and passion that went into making this a reality. The best compliment I can pay this movie is that I'm glad it came into my life. I wish I could buy the soundtrack and a copy of the script but... oh well. I'm looking forward to what Sandy and the crew do next. I'd love a HUNTER PREY 2 (as long as it doesn't suck)

Pure sci-fi movie, does a great job on a small budget
Great indie movie, especially considering the budget...had some really nice twists in it. Some of the logistics were a bit unrealistic (how does one survive multiple days on a searing hot planet without water?) but it was easy enough to suspend disbelief. I agree with commenters who said the dialogue could be hard to understand sometimes. I was also a bit confused by the ending, and will have to go back and watch it again to see if I can pick up any clues along the way. But all in all, a very enjoyable no-frills pure sci-fi movie.

This gets better the longer you watch
OK so it starts with only a 2/5 CGI start point - then goes up with some HD quality film of desert!! What this film isn't is anything like Star Wars!!!!! Actually for a Sci Fi fan its much better it goes back to a point that story was more important than zappy SF and space battles. yes there are a few gun battles and fights - but that is not the point of this film it is all about protagonist v protagonist and there are some good twists (some more signposted than others) and actually as it moves away from the Hollywood idea about what Sci-Fi is to the a closer understanding of the true genre the better it gets. OK its clearly been produced on a (small) budget but the director gets a lot of bang for his buck. If you like something that might make you think watch it.

Preying on my mind
Initially, I couldn't decide whether this was an updated version of Man in the Iron Mask or Brokeback Mountain in space, but ended up being hugely entertained by this modern re-working of a classic plot line. I won't spoil the twist suffice to say, you'll guess about 3 minutes in.... Stuntmen Clark Bartram and Damion Poitier stretch their talents as the prey and hunter (or is that hunter and prey?) and turn in solid if somewhat unemotional performances. The lack of effects and simplicity of the format concentrate the attention on any potential flaws, but what raises this film above the general mediocrity of low budget sci-fi which infests our screens is it's terminator-esque relentless depiction of one man's pusuit of another through an unending, inhospitable landscape. Man's inhumanity to man, his innate ability to sacrifice himself on the altar of inevitability, the insignificance of his existence in the face of the universe it's all here, so forget the plot holes; the monotony of the landscape and the disappointly rushed ending and allow yourself a couple of hours worthy indulgence.

Nice bit of Sci-fi
I decided to take a chance on this film because it had been grouped with other low budget sci-fi films that I had enjoyed. I'm glad I took a chance on it. Unlike a lot of big block buster films the makers of this film used the budget to focus on the two most important areas the actors and the story. The film still has it's flaws but makes the best of what it's got, and the result is easily better than films that had a hundred times the budget.

For a B-Scifi it gets an A
Hunter Prey, does not aim to be a high flying scifi but it has enough twists and turns to keep you viewing till the end. The only problem I found with the movie..is the end...it could just be the continuation of the story, and leaves you with the feeling...where is this story going? It just leaves you wanting.

different, certainly different
not a bad movieno big names and no expensive sci fi special effects, but as I am a fan of the old classic 1980s sci-fi B movie genre I quite enjoyed thisgot a nice twist in the story which is rare these days
