A very good read
The plot is quite complicated, in part because of the large amount of (possibly accurate) dialog and descriptions of religious and cultural nature, belonging to cultures that are not in my understanding. For example, there is a lot of cultural knowledge involved in action in Mecca associated with the hajji (sp?) religious event. The details involved seem plausible within my own very limited exposure to cultures and faiths of that region, but the accuracy of those details is something for which I can not vouch. However, my personal lack of knowledge does not make the details inaccurate, but does make the plot more complicated for me to understand. None the less, it was a good read with an interestingly complicated plot.

There are some brilliant ideas in this book
There are some brilliant ideas in this book, wrapped in a veneer of spook-and-cop worship that a friend of mine once memorably referred to as "holster sniffing". As ever, Mr. Bear has no earthly idea of how to write dialogue between conventional humans, with the result that all conversations appear to be taking place between aliens or plant-based artificial intelligences or so on. A final detail on the genitalia of one of the primary characters, introduced halfway through for no reason then referred to incessantly, pushes this one past the squick frontier.

Mediocre at best
...but I'm tilting toward hyperbole. I bought this book about a year ago and finally ran out of unread "real" books on my shelf (now have a Kindle). I've given about a third of its text and find it almost remarkably dull. I should say that my mystery/thriller favorites are Connelly, Block and Lescroart -- Bear doesn't come close, at least in "Quantico." While I can't said that I "hate" it in the "stars," as there are few things I "hate" in the true definition of the word, the lede to my review is how I definitely feel.

Greg Bear conquers the thriller genre
Greg Bear just never stops impressing me. I already knew him as one of the living masters of "hard" sci-fi, but I never expected him to be able to pull off an FBI thriller so expertly. I finished it last night, and have already purchased the sequel. Praise doesn't get more sincere than that.

Quantico Review
Quantico is near future, hard core science fiction. It doesn't quite make it into military science fiction, but almost. There were minor issues with continuity and I found the red herring plot twist a little strained, but it didn't detract. The story is fast paced and engaging. Overall, a good solid read and a good springboard for more books set in the same world. Quantico: A Novel

Unfortunately too possible
Good book worth the read. The scenario described is far too possible in this day and age. Are we civilized enough to prevent it or will fear drive us over the edge.
