Practice Makes Perfect: English Conversation (Practice Makes Perfect Series) Review: Love it! - I already owned the same book, but the Basic English one. I have used it so much, that decided to try this one. So now I use both, one which focuses more on grammar and vocabulary and this one (English Conversation) that focuses on day to day pertinent situations. It has many great exercises and thorough explanations for common American sayings. Although I agree that perhaps a student will never hear some them, I do focus on those that are quite common. Yes and the students enjoy them a lot or say, "oh so that's what that meant. But what I love the most about this book is that every chapter has a dialogue. I literary own a library of I don't know how many teaching English books and I don't know why, most of them just bring a dialogue or two! Dialogues for me are essential for role playing, improving reading/pronunciation skills, etc. And in my case (English is not my first language), I have surprisingly learned a thing or two with these books. Highly recommend it, bought used and arrived like new! Review: Students Love Speaking Like Americans - Easy to use book with American phrases demonstrated in context. Students love it. Exercises reinforce the use of the phrases and idioms. The dialogues provide an opportunity to practice the flow and rhythm of the language.

Easy to understand
This is going to India with me, where I'll be teaching English to Tibetan refugees. It's clear. Easy to understand. And packs much information in.

Fun and handy English Conversation textbook
I'll get my complaint out of the way first: this book has more jargon and uncommon slang than any English speaker will ever use, to the point that the conversations can be very unnatural and inauthentic. However, as a college-educated native English speaker I at least had heard of all of the phrases used, and it was fun explaining them to my student, a Japanese high schooler visiting the US for the first time. We read through the dialogue and I asked her to create sentences using the new vocabulary. The exercises in the textbook are very well-constructed and extremely useful. Overall, I would recommend this book, though I will be on the lookout for something more rudimentary as well.

I expected something better coming from McGraw Hill
I'm very surprised this book received so many stars in other reviews. I expected something better coming from McGraw Hill. The book utilizes the same formatting throughout, but I do not find it pleasing. The matching exerciese are just bizarre. I doubt those sections will be used at all for my classes. It is packed with exercises, but I wish some of the sections gave an example with the first question in the exercises. It's very helpful to students when they have an example that can guide them through the exercise. Also, I would never teach my students the informal adverb usage of "like" as it is taught in this book. I may end up returnig this one if I can.

As the title suggests, this well-structured book is focused on conversational English. Although you'll find just enough grammar, clear explanations and easy-to-understand examples, this book will not bog you down with theory at all. Each chapter offers practical, real-life conversations and the skills you need to master them. The exercises at the end of each chapter reinforce the things you'll learn. This book really will have you speaking like a native because it's rich in things you never learned in school, but most people say in conversation. Things like "to get in", "to have in store for", "to be up for", "getting ahead of oneself", "having too much on your plate", "a load off my shoulders" and much, much more. I don't think I've ever seen a more practical book and I can highly recommend it.
