How does the main base attach to a tripod head? Just a standard screw mount?

There're 1/4 screw holes in the bottom, if your tripod head clamp is compatible with Arca swiss which is about 38mm wide, you can also clamp to your tripod head

Do the springs make a noise when pressing the buttons? I need to disconnect while recording and don't want sounds like that coming through the audio.

There is metal to metal contact besides the locking mechanism. You would most likely pick this up in an audio recording.
