Has dialogue ever been more perfectly hard-boiled? Has a femme fatale ever been as deliciously evil as Barbara Stanwyck? And has 1940s Los Angeles ever looked so seductively sordid? Working with cowriter Raymond Chandler, director Billy Wilder launched himself onto the Hollywood A-list with this paragon of film-noir fatalism from James M. Cain’s pulp novel. When slick salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) walks into the swank home of dissatisfied housewife Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck), he intends to sell her insurance, but he winds up becoming entangled with her in a far more sinister way. Featuring scene-stealing supporting work from Edward G. Robinson and the chiaroscuro of cinematographer John F. Seitz, Double Indemnity is one of the most wickedly perverse stories ever told and the cynical standard by which all noir must be measured. 2-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES Review: Great Movie! - This is an extremely well done movie in all aspects, and Criterion did a great job with this 4k version. The picture quality is excellent! Review: Superb crime drama - This is one of the finest crime dramas ever made in USA. The twist is that the protagonists are the murderers - a very daring idea for an American film in 1944. This edition has been beautifully restored from archive materials so the black and white photography will glow on your screen. Highly recommended.

Criterion is the best!
This is not a review of the movie but of the special features. There are so many good "extras" that really add to the enjoyment of this classic movie. I learned to appreciate so many little things I had missed in earlier viewings. Well worth buying the Criterion Collection version.

Fantastic!
This is one of my favorite all time Film Noirs! Grew up with Fred MacMurray in Disney films and never realized he was a serious actor and then as adult after getting hooked on Noir by Orson Welles and the Cohen Brothers and came across this film playing at a theater and was hooked. Everything from the classic Film Noir lingo to the use of black and white shadowing. Barbara Stan-wick plays a perfect dame to MacMurrays slick talking insurance salesman. I own this on dvd then picked up the great blu ray , but now it finally gets the Criterion treatment in 4k to boot. Edward G Robinson takes a back seat as it’s later in his career and he was willing to play supporting actor to MacMurrays lead. The result is entertainment from start to finish. They tried a remake in the 80’s (an extra on the DVD and it’s unwatchable compared to the original. The story’s so good and the language is great! A must own if you’re a Noir fan or a criterion collector.

Don’t trust Fred MacMurray
This movie is really more about the relationship between MacMurray and Edward G Robinson than the “love” story between MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck who don’t seem to even like each other. It seems like sort of a father/son dynamic where the son is trying to overcome the long time dominance of the father, but they still both love each other. In fact, MacMurray tells Robinson that he loves him but he never says this to Stanwyck. MacMurray is really a rascal in this movie who engages in all kinds of nefarious activities, despite (or because of?) his respect and devotion for Robinson. MacMurray was an actor who was at his best when his light hearted exterior hid a very dark heart. He played this type of character only 3 times that I know of: Double Indemnity, The Caine Mutiny and The Apartment. He embodies the superficial charm of the sociopath. The movie is well directed, well paced and well acted. A true classic.

Noir
Double Indemnity (4K Criterion Collection) Dir. Billy Wilder 4/5 A fantastic Film Noir. An insurance salesman falls too deep in love with a woman. She gets him to partner in a heinous crime. Barbara Stanwyck is great in this movie. As the femme Fatale. Maybe even the ultimate femme Fatale. Which is saying something about a movie that came out in 1944. I enjoyed this one. The back and forth between the two leads is very exciting. It's no wonder this got a Criterion release.

film noir at it's best
One of the all time great film noir's. Barbara Stanwyck gives a fantastic performance as the femme fatale and Fred Macmurray equally as the lovestruck insurance inspector drawn into her web. Edward G Robinson is also excellent as the detective. All those who haven't had the privlege to see this great film i recommend the gorgeous 4k special edition.

Perfect film. Average 4k blu ray.
Double indemnity is the perfect noir. It's script is a fast as they get. There's no better noir script. How come I've not given a 5 star review? Sadly this 4k blu ray has an average at best) picture quality. Unusually, criterion haven't done much with the picture. PQ is inconsistent. It changes from scene to scene which is distracting and disconcerting. I expected better than this.

Great Movie, Great Package of Extras
I've always like this movie, one of the best and original of the film noirs. The picture and sound quality is excellent as is usually the case with Criterion releases, but the amount of extras requires a second blu-ray disc ... three episodes of Billy Wilder chatting about his movies, a couple of critical discussions of the film including the always interesting and enthusiastic Imogen Sara Smith, and others. Well worth getting if you love Billy Wilder films or film noirs.

Great film!
It's a absolute classic and must see, 4k does it justice even if it's a bit on the grainy side (film I assume)
