Eating for Beauty

Good book
This is a great book for someone who is interested in becoming raw vegan and one of the best ways to learn about the health benefits of various plant foods. Still one of the best many years later. I first got this in 2007 or so.

AWESOME!
My letter to David Wolfe after reading this book.Hey David,I have been in awe of your knowledge and passion over the years you have shared with the world. I also share in your amazing quest for super nutrition and longevity on the same level.Christmas 2005 my sister gave me Kevin Trudeau's book "Natural Cures"....etc. and it changed my life. It changed it as to solidify my thoughts at that time. This was a very important step in the journey. The Organic food direction leaped on a personal level to near 100% after reading it the first time.I then found one of your videos and have since been become enthralled to share your raw food journey with you. In the sense that I feel I know you on a personal level.Your nutrition perfection direction in life as with everything has catapulted me into new atmospheres. Certainly you have become a major trigger energy source of that forward motion and I Thank you abundantly!100% of my food I get from a local organic farm here in Vero Beach Florida (White Rabbit Acres) I can't remember what the inside of a standard grocery store even looks like anymore. :-)I am lucky to live on the beach where the ocean and sand are one of my closest friends. At night I walk the beach watching the turtles come ashore to nest under the stars. My kitchen in super organized into 3 sections. 1. super herbs, (teas, salads) 1 super powders (smoothies), 3. superfoods (raw bars). I have perfected the art of raw bars with Gogi berries, Cacao, Dates, hemp, :-), :-), etc. etc. you know...!!! Let me know where you are and I'll send you a batch to try.I'm on my 3rd read of your book Eating for Beauty. People walk by on the beach and ask about it almost every day. I've run out of amazing comments for you.In my world of teaching the Cue Sports for over 20 years, I have received many amazing letters, emails, phone calls, etc. and without a doubt they have moved me into positive realms which I could not have foreseen alone.I share my passion with you as the journey unfolds itself into each future chapter.Feedforward with great wisdom into all our lives, you are loved!Thank you!~ Oyster

Unscientific Raw Food Mumbo Jumbo
I had no idea this book was going to preach the doctrine of raw foods. If I had I wouldn't have wasted my money. It's full of contradictory logic and outrageous and unscientific claims. The most egregious example of this is equating pretty sparkly veggies depicted in Kirlian photography as more healthy. Meat is less healthy because it isn't sparkly. Actually I thought the picture of the raw cauliflower was gorgeous. Does that make it a healthy food for me? What about my cat? If sparkly means healthy can I sprinkle mica on my food to make it healthier? Because according to the author chickens transmute mica into calcium in their bodies. I mean how else do chickens not raised on limestone pasture get it? Apparently the author has no idea that chickens aren't vegetarians but voracious predators of little bugs and mammals if allowed to live naturally and forage for all or part of their food. Then of course there is the thoroughly debunked nonsense about the acid/alkaline balance of our foods. Our body does a fine job of keeping that in check regardless of what we eat. To say otherwise is the height of ignorance. And I'm choosing to believe the author is ignorant rather than purposefully misleading. I mean the man believes in transmutation of elements for crying out loud.Enzymes were a hot topic of this book, as they are for all raw food enthusiasts. Too bad your body uses its own enzymes to digest food not the enzymes in the plants. Which leads me to another point. In the author's happy hippie view of nature all the plants in the world surely exist to nourish the animals. Nothing could be further from the truth. Plants don't want to be eaten. Esp not their leaves or seeds. Eat their fruit (if you "pay" for it by spreading the seeds) but the leaves are there to provide food for the plant....not food for you...and they can't run away from possible predators so they employ the next best thing. Chemical warfare! They contain an astonishing array of chemical weapons to avoid being eaten. Neurotoxins, skin irritants, toxic proteins, digestive inhibitors, chemicals which bind to minerals making them biologically, unavailable. Incidentally, many of which are neutralized by cooking.Humans are omnivores. That is not debatable. As such we are meant to eat plants and animals. It also means both plants and animals are nourishing and good for us. Properly raised animals are health food. They contain highly bioavailable nutrients and a protein quality which blows plant protein away. Eat plants and animals. Drink water. Simple.I do like that the author didn't seem particularly fat phobic although he gets it from plant sources which means his PUFA and Omega-6 load is way too high. I agree that people should eat more fruits and veggies and that we are severely lacking in micronutrients. I just don't agree with a vegetarian, certainly not vegan, raw food approach to health. It's not based in science and eliminating animals foods is unnatural for humans. So while there were some redeeming qualities the very premise of the book and pseudoscience junk was just too overwhelming and I cannot recommend this book. At all.
