I finally have internet at my house
used a T-Mobile SIM card and my speeds were ~26 down and ~10 up. Amazon won't let me post a link to the rpi board post on how to set this up, so here is where you can find it. go to WaveShare's wiki (google "waveshare wiki"), scroll down under the green heading "Expansions", and click on "SIM7600A-H 4G HAT". Under "Related Instruction" click on "Setup wwan0 interface for 4G network".To physically connect this, just connect it by USB (not the UART one). You don't need to connect it to the gpio headers. There's not a lot of instructions for people who don't use this stuff a lot, so be prepared to be lost if you're new to this. I got this working in about 30 minutes because I had to investigate various things. As for the jumpers, mine are removed. The command to connect this was slightly different for my service than the one in the link.qmicli -p -d /dev/cdc-wdm0 --device-open-net='net-raw-ip|net-no-qos-header' --wds-start-network="apn='fast.t-mobile.com',auth=PAP,ip-type=4" --client-no-release-cidI removed the username and password and added the Auth type. Check the APN settings for your phone to see what you need to add.I haven't used anything else besides 4g either. It is connected to an old rpi B, wwan0 is bridged to eth0, which is connected to the internet port of my router. Now I have wifi when my only option was satellite. Adding another line to my plan cost $10, which is cheaper than dial-up. I can't believe we have robots on Mars but people still having their only option as a shoddy phone line for internet. For anyone who is wondering, there are other dongles that you can use connect a SIM card to your computer, but they may use the Hotspot feature on your plan. My Hotspot is capped at 200kbps/s. Don't buy one of those unless its what you want. Also running this on an rpi means you can run it off battery anywhere. I've powered this whole contraption with a USB port.I'm imagining ways to make a home monitoring system that sends text messages, pictures, or video for certain events.
