The Squire's Tale (The Squire's Tales, 1)

A new telling for some of the Arthurian legends.
Very well done! About fifty years ago I was working on my advanced degree in English, but couldn't find a professor who knew more than I did! So I walked away. There are at least three "stories" in a file down stairs. Mallory's stories don't always follow the older stories, and much that's been written was to strengthen the English people's sense of purpose. Especially during Victoria's long reighn. Please enjoy this and other stories you can find on any library shelf!this

Wonderful!
Truly a wonderful story. I read it as a child and was captivated by it. 15 years later, and I still love it just as fondly.

... as an adult because it was one of my favorite childhood novels
I reread this book as an adult because it was one of my favorite childhood novels. The story is very fun and the characters are interesting, and I enjoyed reading it. It's a great way for young people to start reading Arthurian legends in an accessible way, since many of the classics of the genre are difficult to read. However, it is a book in which a male author writes about two male protagonists coming to understand the value of women, which is pretty odd. His conclusion is that women can be good in spite of ugliness and bad in spite of beauty, and that women deserve self-determination. I'm on board for thesis #2, but the first one is pretty shallow and reduces women to being either good or bad, beautiful or ugly. Arguably, that is an aspect of Arthurian Legend. But this book is very clearly trying to adapt those myths to a modern audience, and I think that is an aspect of Arthurian legend that should be left behind.

A favorite work of fiction
A very enjoyable Arthurian tale. I re-read this book about once a year, as well as the other nine in the series. Gerald Morris is one of my favorite authors. I wish he wrote more for adults.

My Favorite Retelling of the Arthurian Legend for Young People
This is a great beginning to a wonderful series about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. We read the first five or six books in the series to our children when they were younger and they have continued reading it on their own. They have asked for their own copies as they have moved out of the house.

Great book for adults and students
I enjoyed this entire series quite a bit. I would recommend it for middle school/jr high up through adults. I had a bachelors and a masters degree at the time I read it.I think the other reviews have given enough plot synopsis so I won't re-write it. In my opinion, Gerald Morris is a masterful author with great story ideas and superb character development. I am anxiously awaiting the next book from this author.

A great way to meet King Arthur's court
I enjoyed this tale very much. I love the character of the hermit, and I hope to meet him again in some of the follow on books, and Terrance and Gawain's relationship make the book delightful. Gerald Morris weaves his tale well, and I appreciated the way he adds to the legend of Sir Gawain without adding in anything that contradicts it.

Delightful!
I bought The Squire's Tale to 'pre-read' before giving it to my grandson. Mr. Morris knows the original Arthurian legends well and incorporates them skillfully. I laughed out loud many times; he has captured some of the humor in the original stories (which can be very funny). I will give this to my grandson, and get the others in the series to read myself. I doubt, however, that many American teenage readers will catch the allusions to the original stories.

Bellissimo libro, really amazing book !!
Adoro il Sir Gawain di Morris: un cavaliere senza macchia e senza paura, veramente bellissimo a chi piace il genere arturiano. ho comprato questo libro (e anche tutti quelli dopo) perchè ho scoperto che l'autore non ne aveva scritti solo 3 (che invece sono quelli tradotti in italiano) ma 11 !! così ho deciso di rimpinguare la mia libreria ;Dil lessico non è molto difficile, tranne per qualche parola inusuale (e cmq un ottimo esercizio):scabbard: foderoclearing: radurabow: inginocchiarsiho letto la versione dopo aver letto 3 volte (in tempi diversi, anche a distanza di molti anni) quello in italiano.qualche differenza dalla versione inglese e qualche manchevolezza del traduttore, quasi introvabili a meno che non conosciate il testo in italiano quasi a memoria ;DI love Morris's Gawain and all of his books. i bought the 3 books translated in my language, then i found out there were other books and i bought all of the series, starting from the first one... really beautiful book !it's for boy, but i'm 20 and i'm still loving this, from 8 years ;D
