Flying Witch 1

One of my favorite anime in 2016 was *Flying Witch*. It's a sweet show about a young girl who is, at age fifteen, considered an adult in the world of witches, but whose parents want her to, nonetheless, finish high school and get some more training and life experience. To that end, the young woman, Makoto moves away from the city where she lives and goes to stay with her extended family consisting of her uncle, aunt, and two cousins. Once she gets there, she gets reacquainted with her cousins. Kei, the older brother is her age and in her class, while Chinatsu, the younger sister was too young to remember her and is at first intimidated by, and even afraid of her. Partly this is due to her strange behavior of talking to her cat as if she (I think it's a she) could understand. All of this changes, of course, when she discovers that the cat (Chito) really can understand because Makoto is a witch, and thus has some fun things that she can do and is involved with due to her magic studies. Despite what it sounds like, the magic element, though ever-present, is really not the focus of the story. The focus is a fun, sweet, and soothing story where these characters live every-day lives interspersed with cute or funny examples of the supernatural. Makoto is absent-minded but a good sort. Kei is reliable but goes off on his own things sometimes. Nao (Kei's childhood friend and Makoto's new friend and classmate) is serious and sometimes the straight man to both Kei and Makoto's antics. Chito, Makoto's sapient cat familiar is a hoot and the uncle and aunt are (though rarely seen) fun characters too. And Chinatsu is so sweet and adorable. She could almost sell the story by herself. Of course, given my love for the anime, I went and purchased the first volume of the manga, and it was worth it. It's cool to see just how faithfully they adapted the manga and that the original story had the same fun and sweetness, just to a lesser degree, not because it isn't good enough on those fronts, but that the anime added more depth. The coloring and the music of the anime largely accounted for this deeper experience, but the manga was still a fun read. The artwork was actually quite good, with the only real drawback being the backgrounds, which are kinda vague in some panels. That's another area that the anime does better. Of course, vague backgrounds are a constant issue with manga, but this carries it to a whole new level. Really with the detail to character designs, facial expressions, so forth, it's a pity the author kinda seemed to skimp on backgrounds. But that's the only real issue at all with the art. I always enjoy a sweet and fun series, and *Flying Witch* most *definitely* fits the bill. I can't recommend it enough. Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.

I am forever obsessed with slice of life magic mangas! It’s just so cute! I can’t get enough of it

Like many people I first became aware of "Flying Witch" from the anime of the same name. This is a guilty pleasure anime for many, it's slow, it's gentle and utterly absorbing. Having seen the anime I realised that there were more books than the anime covered and so I bought the first one to see if the charm carried into print. This is the first of (currently) eight installments of the "Flying witch" manga. It features Makoto a high-school girl who also happens to be a trainee witch. She is sent from bustling Yokohama to rural Aomori to complete her training and to learn about life outside the city. This is the story of her adventures in a new place, new high-school, new friends and new mysteries to engage with. This first volume is well within the arc of the anime but events are written in a different order. This is a gentle, charming and romanticized version of life in rural Japan. It is sweet and charming. Life flows along quite slowly with Makoto and her cat as they learn about new places and people. It's restful and a romanticized view of the world. This is a very worthwhile addition to the anime and I look forward to reading the whole story.

This is a really cute story about a teenaged witch who is learning more about life. Chito the cat is adorable and I wish I could talk to my own cats like that!

This was cute easy and quick read. A girl learning to be Witch but we only get to see her do one actual spell. But you get to see her fly a broom. Hopefully there is more magic learning in book 2.

It was a very cute book! I really enjoyed the read! I really can't wait to read the next one.

A nice slice of life work. you can see the art improving too. Not the best volumn of the series but it will get better. Nice and funny read. Recommend for all ages.

Having now read every volume of this series available in English (9 volumes), I am astonished at the author’s ability to keep the story and characters as interesting and engaging as they are while at the same time eschewing any villainous characters or interpersonal drama. Every character is a model of decency and politeness. I love reading this to my younger spawn. Great stuff. (The anime is also great.)

Un manga leggero, senza troppi colpi di scena, ma con una trama funzionante, nonché ambiente e personaggi ben delineati. I capitoli sono brevi e abbastanza. divertenti. Chi ha già visto l'anime può essersi fatto un'idea. La traduzione inglese non influisce minimamente sulla comprensione dei dialoghi. Edizione semplice, senza tavole a colori. Peccato non sia stato pubblicato in Italia, non sarà un manga strabiliante, ma è sicuramente pacato e simpatico. Ogni tanto non fa male leggere storie tranquille. Meritatissime 5 stelle anche perché il servizio Amazon è stato super, come sempre.

This is a super wholesome manga and I can’t wait to get cracking on the rest of the series! I’m an absolute sucker for slice of life and the fact this one is about a witch and her familiar got me hooked instantly!

Entiendo que si eres alguien que no esté acostumbrado a leer mangas antiguos o que hayas visto el anime , tal vez el diseño de personajes te va a parecer raro ,pero eso no importa LA HISTORIA LO VALE, un slice of life completamente infravalorado, en este volumen Makoto se va de Yokohama a el campo a vivir a casa de sus tíos , lo que ellos no saben es que ella es una bruja

A bit too childish and simple for my taste. But the story and caracters are cute. I might give the second book of the series a try.
