Best Mechanical Pencil . . . Ever
OK, I'm a mechanical pencil nerd . . . That being said, this is the best mechanical pencil I've ever owned. I actually researched various ones and this one always seems to come out on top. I now know why. It works flawlessly, has a decent weight and feel (it's actually metal, not plastic), and the point retracts back into pencil when you press the clip so no more getting poked through your pocket. Seems really durable even with heavy use and, while more expensive then the cheapos you can get at the local retailer, you actually do get more for the money. Only disappointment is the replacement erasers made by Pentel are half the size of the ones that come with the pencil.

Very well made
Fantastic mechanical pencils. They have a great weight to them, and are comfortable. Push the clip and the lead and tip auto retract. I've got some similar cheaper knockoffs - they are good, but you get what you pay for - these are worth the extra.

The retractable tip is a game changer!
I have used many drafting pencils (Rotring, other Pentels), but the GraphGear 1000 is my favorite for carrying around. The standout feature is the dual-action retractor—when you clip it to your pocket or notebook, the tip automatically retracts. No more stabbing myself or bending the fragile metal sleeve! The grip is unique a mix of knurled metal and rubber ovals. It gives you the precision of a metal grip without it being too harsh on your fingers during long writing sessions. It feels premium, heavy, and well-balanced. Highly recommended for students or architects who need a durable daily driver. Pros: • Retractable tip protects the lead and your pockets. • Grip is comfortable (metal + rubber). • Solid spring-loaded clip. Cons: • Slightly top-heavy compared to the GraphGear 500. 100% get what you pay for, totally worth it Size is perfect, easy to grasp Write speed is another level ✨✨✨

High quality pencil
The Pentel GraphGear 1000 0.7mm mechanical pencil is easily one of the best writing tools I have ever used. The first thing you notice is the weight balance; it has a solid metal body that feels premium but not heavy, and the grip section is perfectly designed with small rubber inserts that make it extremely comfortable for long writing or sketching sessions. The click mechanism feels crisp and reliable, and the lead advances smoothly every time with no sticking or uneven jumps. The retractable tip is one of the best parts because it protects the sleeve when you put it in your pocket, keeping it from bending or catching on fabric. The lead hardness indicator near the clip is another great feature, especially when switching between different lead types for drafting or shading. Writing with it feels precise and steady, and the pencil has a professional look that really stands out. The clip holds tightly without bending, and the entire build feels like something that will last for years. It holds a good amount of lead, the eraser works well for small corrections, and everything about it shows quality and attention to detail. It’s the perfect mix of comfort, control, and durability, making it an easy five-star choice for anyone who writes or draws often.

Worth it
Fantastic pen. I absolutely love this pen. It's not at all heavy like I expected. It is expensive, but if you do art and need a good pencil look no further. As many other reviewers stated the retractable feature should help the longevity. The pen comes with 2 leads. It did unfortunately come in an unmarked non-descript cellophane package that did absolutely zero to protect the product. It's a good thing it's fairly durable.

This pencil was great, until it wasn’t.
UPDATE: I kept working with the pencil and now it works again. Not sure what I may have done differently this time, but it works just like it did before. ————————- The pencil felt good in my hand, was weighted just right and performed well. But after 4 months of occasional use, it just stopped working. It would no longer “load” a new price of lead when the previous one had been used up. I did my best to clear it, making sure there wasn’t lead somehow jammed or otherwise stuck. Will I buy another? Maybe. I really liked the pencil. Not sure if it was a fluke occurrence or user error but it’s good enough to try again. I hope a new one will last longer than just a few months.

A very nice make of pencil - one of my faves!
I absolutely love the Pentel GraphGear series of pencils, and the 1000s are peak, but the 0.9mm of that particular line is my favorite of all. A nice sturdy pen that is great for drafting and fun to use. It’s got a good heft to it and is well made and fairly comfortable for writing (though technically it’s made for drafting). A very good value pencil! I did have one snap when I dropped it. But otherwise these are built tough.

Best mechanical on the market.
An absolutely wonderful pencil. Comfortable, retractable tip protects the weakest point, hold plenty of back up lead.

In short: Fulfils all criteria to guarantee an excellent product experience. Looks: I have lost track of how many years I have had mine (best part of a decade now). They still look the business and are often asked about by my clients whilst I am using them. One was even stolen, so I suppose that makes them quite desirable. Construction: The retractable tip is just perfect. It has a slight springiness to it that not only cushions the writing/drawing experience, but also helps avoid lead breakages, although the modern hi-poly' refills are pretty good in their own right. Made principally of plastic and aluminium, it is light yet very robust. The combination of a knurled section and rubber grip is perfect - no readjustment or sweaty finger problems. There are no fancy gears that turn the lead around (as advertised by other products) neither have I ever thought to myself that I need one of those - one less unnecessary mechanism that can go wrong = minimalism = long-lasting = happy owner. Use: Always works well, very easy to carry around (very light). Solid enough construction to withstand severe punishment - mine has been submerged in water for ~3 days (flood while I was away) & dropped from a height of over 10m (~30ft) - accidentally dropped in the space between staircase - which obliterated the lead refills inside but the pen works just fine. If it was the cheaper plastics varieties of mechanical pencils then they would not have survived. I'm also sure that some of the more expensive varieties will not be able to boast this. Even if it did stop working, replacing them is not going to be too painful. As testament to how well these have worked, I now have 3 varieties of these that take different refill sizes, as well as a spare 0.5mm as my all-rounder when I have to jot down or explain anything on the go. The oldest one is pushing a decade in age and looks/works like new. [For the astute fans out there: yes, they did make minor changes in their construction over the years, but not to any detriment] Conclusion: I have never been let down, only pleasantly surprised. I would highly recommend this over any other product I have tried (including comparisons against other brands that are >4x more expensive). A fantastic product that offers excellent value and many years of great service. This product has never disappointed me and I'm certain that most will agree once they have had the pleasure of using it.

The quality is good. Its slightly on the heavier side with metal and all. Nib goes in when u click the clip so it doesn't prick us accidentally. Nice Lineweight. Good grip. Suitable for sketching. Always Love japanese products. Rarely ever goes wrong.
