Ground-breaking advance in the Direct Method for Ancient Greek
Coderch's wonderful new edition does two things which will thrill proponents of Rouse's Direct Method. All of his helps are themselves written in Ancient Greek. He glosses rare words, not just with L2 synonyms and antonyms, but with extended functional definitions. He provides L2 simplified paraphrases when the syntax is at all complicated. He gives the root forms of words, avoiding both English and even L2 metalanguage. When I got stuck on the text, a quick glance over at his helps (which are printed, conveniently, directly to the left of the text) allowed me to instantly understand the meaning, without ever leaving the target language. This full immersion approach to an entire text, though quite common in Latin and in modern languages, has rarely been done for Greek texts since Rouse and before him Neophytos Doukas. The second thing that critics of Grammar-Translation will love about the text is that it provides comprehensible input. Like the original, all his sentences are short, the syntax is nearly always simple, the vocabulary for the most part limited and repetitive Now, it is true that Coderch writes an idiomatic Attic which does not avoid rare vocab and even limited complex syntax. He does not, I think, strive to reproduce the singularly simple style of the original. One could imagine a Koine rendering that might do this, but then I think the text would be less valuable for learning Ancient Greek, and probably not as artful as Coderch's, which does occasionally combine the beauty and simplicity of the original French. Coderch's text is particularly easy to read, of course, for those of us who are very familiar with the original. This is a great choice for a modern text to render into AG because some of us, having read it innumerable times since childhood, have already long internalized the underlying meaning. For those less familiar, the black and white reproductions of Saint-Exupery's drawings will also provide valuable Direct Method helps. And this text should encourage all to become more familiar with the original. (I would also give two thumbs up to both the 1966 and the 2015 film adaptations, for which Coderch, when he gets a chance, should write Ancient Greek subtitles. :) )Le Petit Prince is one of the greatest specimens of literature ever produced. Sad, iconic, wise, devastatingly satiric, it is a credo to anyone who has loved and lost and suffered and has been in need of a sheep or a slow walk towards a fountain. For putting this masterpiece into the tongue of Socrates, following the method of Rouse and Orberg, in a book with a large, readable font that costs less than a large Starbucks, Coderch deserves πολλην χαριν.

So pleasant!
Most Ancient Greek texts are slow going, in my experience. Harry Potter wasn't any different. But somehow Juan Coderch was able in this little translation to make a text that I could pretty much fly through. At the same time he did not skimp on grammatical complexity or vocabulary. I really appreciated this text and hope to use it someday in the classroom.

Good job.
I'm impressed. My level is with a little help I can read it slowly, probably a lot faster the second time. I read it in English, French and Greek together, alternating them, about a page a day. But, it was a good translation, with some creativity used for non-existent ancient Greek words. Obviously, this is only going to appeal to a small group of people, but, I'm glad he did it.

This is a gift for a classics student. The print is clean and crisp. There is plenty of room between the text and the notes in the margin.
