Master the fascinating game of Go with this expert guidebook. Go is a two-player board game that first originated in ancient China but is also very popular in Japan and Korea. There is significant strategy and philosophy involved in the game, and the number of possible games is vast—even when compared to chess. Go has enthralled hundreds of millions of people in Asia, where it is an integral part of the culture. In the West, many have learned of its pleasures, especially after the game appeared in a number of hit movies, TV series, and books, and was included on major Internet game sites. By eliciting the highest powers of rational thought, the game draws players, not just for the thrills of competition, but because they feel it enhances their mental, artistic, and even spiritual lives. Go! More Than a Game is the guidebook that uses the most modern methods of teaching to learn Go, so that, in a few minutes, anyone can understand the two basic rules that generate the game. The object of Go is surrounding territory, but the problem is that while you are doing this, the opponent may be surrounding you! In a series of exciting teaching games, you will watch as Go's beautiful complexities begin to unfold in intertwining patterns of black and white stones. These games progress from small 9x9 boards to 13x13 and then to the traditional 19x19 size. Go! More Than a Game has been completely revised by the author based on new data about the history of early Go and the Confucians who wrote about it. This popular book includes updated information such as the impact of computer versions on the game, the mysterious new developments of Go combinatorics, advances in Combinatorial Game Theory and a look at the current international professional playing scene. Review: One of my favorites! - I love this game and learning so much about it's history and context was a true pleasure. In fact, after my first copy was not returned, I bought a second hand reread it. I have given this as a gift to other new players. I have given it to my Chiang grandchildren. If you are at. All interested in this ancient game that gave bith to AI, buy this book. You Won't regret it. Review: TEN STARS - I am a perpetulal novice, trying to play GO for at least 35 years. This book is the first explanation that has made any sense to me. The illustrations step through a game one stone at a time. I am able follow the games on my GO board so it is like having a tutor in the room with me. Aside from giving me hope for my own pathetic GO game, this book provides an excellent example of how to explain any subject. Anyone who is trying to teach (such as home schoolers) should study this book for ideas on how to present a subject that demands logic (math!).

very helpful, though must confess I haven't finished it yet - as I waded deeper into the strategy, my time and patience wore a little thin.

Great introduction to Go
Excellent introductory book for the game and gently and logically introduces strategy so that your games immediately will become more thoughtful.

Even better the second time through
Even better the second time through! As a beginner with no play experience of any kind, I read through it quickly but I was not following most of the reasoning. However, now that the computer resigns to me some of the time (with handicap, of course) I picked the book up again and it means so much more to me, now. Awesome! I had forgotten that the author said to only read so far, go play (lose a 100 games?), then come back. He was so right! I really like the format of following different levels of games from opening to scoring with detailed explanations of each move, even with variations. Anyone learning Go will want more than one beginning book as they seem to present the material in different ways and stress different aspects of the game. I highly recommend 'Go! More Than a Game' be one of them!

Excellent Introduction to the Game of Go.
This is a book that is written for the beginner Go player. It moves pretty quickly, covers the basics well, and provides the reader with a lot to think about. It helps to have a board and pieces handy to help study positions and get a good feel for the board state as it develops.

Excellent point of view regarding a complex game with simple rules.
I've read several books on Go over the years, and this one didn't disappoint. The historical point of view is always interesting for such a classic game, and the points of view on playing are clear (even if I'm not that good at implementing them). I prefer this book to another I've bought in the past as gifts for friends, and will likely be sending this one in future.

Useful book
A balanced book on Go. Succinct enough to learn to play, but with extra depth and texture for those who want it. Shipping was very slow due to COVID-19, but I would buy from seller again as they were responsive and sincere. Ships from UK.

slightly disappointing but still worthwhile
Having bought and enjoyed Go Basics: Concepts and Strategies for New Players I decided to try this one. There's a lot of very good material here, he develops the concepts introduced in his other book, and does so well and lucidly. A lot of little and not so little ideas are explored to enable one to progress. Competent players will gain a lot, in all aspects of the game, once they've worked through all the material. However, he also duplicates much introductory material that was in the first book. To my mind there was a first rate book to be had by combining these two books into one. If you've played before don't bother with his other book, if you haven't then the Amazon discounts get you 1.5 books for slightly more than the cost of one. Once you've got through this you'll be ready to read Lessons in the Fundamentals of Go (Beginner and Elementary Go Books) .
