A Great Book to Introduce Children to a Variety of Musical Styles
I have purchased several of this type of book for my grandsons. It is so important to introduce great music to youngsters. These books are some of my grandsons favorites. This one has a nice variety of musical styles from different places and times in history. Just like the other books in the series the pictures, the binding, and the music quality are excellent!

Love these books
I personally love these books. We have several. I find them very interactive and enjoyable to read aloud to my kids, as well as soothing and relaxing. My kids love hearing the music as we read. I just think it adds a little something special to an otherwise ordinary story.

Needs editing to be worth the $$
My children love musical books, we have all the Story Orchestra books, as well as the Poppy books. I'm really picky about quality writing and musical selections. That being said, here are the pros:-Varied musical selections. I love all the different pieces from various countries and time periods. I do wish there had been some more Asian influences, but I also acknowledge this was made to appeal to Western audiences.-The sound quality was pretty good.-Lovely illustrations. I think they appealed more to me than my children, but I do think they are objectively nice and rich with details. I like how they drew instruments that I wasn't familiar with with decent accuracy. The cons:-Consistent length of sound pieces. Some were longer than others, which seems like a small thing, but it actually does disrupt the flow of the book when it's not equal and it leaves the reader unsatisfied. This is a matter of editing and should've been considered as important.-Embarassing spelling and grammar errors. Gosh, it really bothers me about the Mozart page where his mother and sisters names are mixed up. That was confusing for my kids and I'm always having to remember which one was which. The Clara Schumann page the quote mark isn't in the right spot. On Grieg's page, Garden is capitalized. Low hanging fruit man, c'mon!-Which one is Pip and which one is Sammy?? Who knows. After several readings, I still can't tell. If you're not going to make it clear, just leave them out altogether. There's no storyline, and it really wouldn't take away anything if they were completely left out.For the price, I expect a decently edited book with recordings that are about the same length. This is a slapdash, hastily published book that tries to be the Story Orchestra books but just isn't. With editing, it could come close, but right now, it's not worth it. In my opinion, you can afford to be picky because there are other sound books out there.

A non-fiction Story Orchestra book
If you have ever read a Story Orchestra book, this book is in the same layout / format, albeit a non-fiction book. (Tip: If you haven’t read a Story Orchestra book with your presschooler or early elementary child, run - don’t walk! - to get a book to read!)Told through the eyes of several children, Pip and Sammy, who are playing a concert to their stuffies, this book takes you through the ages and around the world to educate them on some popular types of music throughout history. This book delights the readers senses through visual, auditory, and literary works combined into a cute story. Each page is a time-traveled vignette, telling the story as if Sammy and Pip landed in that time and were interacting with the musician. You get a literary backdrop of the time and place in history (such as “It’s 1875 and Edvard Grieg is sitting in a little red hut in his Garden in Norway”). Each page describes the type of music, how it was inspired, its tempo, and how it makes the children feel. The artwork on each page, although drawn in cartoon style, is bold, colorful, and helps readers to visualize what it wold be like to land in the place and time of the musician. Finally, each page has a “Press to Listen” with a ten-second clip of the music played by professional musicians. The penultimate page of the book show a wrap-up of Sammy and Pip’s story, inviting the reader to explore further by learning history and by playing an instrument, even if it is a makeshift. The final page is a spot which lists each musical piece in the book in one spot and includes the name of the composer, the name of the piece, and a short descriptive of each. The book operates on a button cell battery which is replaceable. There is no volume control or on/off switch. This is not an authoritative guide to the history of music - it is limited to 10 pieces. There are often large jumps as the book starts in the twelfth century. You may get a piece from one century and then skip several centuries and then have a few pieces twenty years apart. No matter, this is a great introduction for kids to music throughout time. The addition of the characters and short paragraph of information helps make the story more relatable to younger children. This would make a lovely gift for kids who have shown interest in music.
