Q: Why does the wifi extender need to be in the upright position, and what happens if it doesn't?

The unit will work in all configurations but the loss of antenna power will be reduced changing the range significantly. When in the down position the signal needs the reflect from the floor whereas in the upright position the signal is free to travel up and around reflecting off ceiling to open areas. If you place behind furniture pointing down makes it much worst. Good luck.

Q: I'm adding a cellular unit to my existing alarm system. The connection is not that great. Can I add the wireless extender to increase the wifi?

Hi! If the Ethernet wall outlet is an active LAN connection, then yes, you can treat it as a physical LAN connection and connect the main Powerline adapter to it via Ethernet cable.

Q: Can I plug it into 220v outlet?

Yes, these adapters support 100 - 240V, 50/60Hz. Just be sure to use the appropriate outlet/socket converter if taking the kit to another region than the US.
