Soul Hackers 2: Launch Edition - PlayStation 5

This game is NOT a continuation of ATLUS' Persona franchise. Let's get that out of the way first. The protagonists aren't schoolmates, and the game has no real dating sim elements. This is replicants rezzing people to help stop a plot to destroy reality. Now some history. The original Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers was a Japan-only 1997 Sega Saturn (and 1999 Playstation) spinoff from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. It eventually got a 3DS release in 2012 in the West. Soul Hackers 2 appears to be a reboot of sorts for this spinoff of the SMT franchise, and no prior experience with the original Soul Hackers game appears to be necessary. I personally find the gameplay loop, story, characters, art, english dub and music to be well done. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't go into details. I did check out the day one DLCs. Some of the loot DLCs could definitely make the party overpowered, so I advise moderation there. It should be noted that costume DLC is visible only in combat, not in the overworld or in cutscenes. Again, please consider that this is not a Persona game, and never was stated to be one. It is a new twist on an entirely different SMT spinoff from 1997. Soul Hackers 2 is definitely my new favorite SMT adjacent title. I very much enjoy it, and I encourage fellow fans of SMT and Persona to give it a try.

This game reminds me of Digital Devil Saga in a way. Pretty cool game, I like the turn based fighting, the story isnt bad either, the characters are able to learn new abilities and keep them, the main character is very strong and utilized the other characters abilities. Fun game if you like anime and RPGs

I've played SMT games for a long time and this game was one that I missed on release. I think most of the critique I've seen online about the design is fair, dungeons are a bit visually bland as the game progresses. Story isn't exceptional in any way. Combat is fun and the gimmick is fun and intuitive. One thing I think is easily overlooked with this game in particular though, is that is has a FREE PS5 upgrade included. I just so happened to buy this before I was surprised with an early Xmas gift of a PS5 and I was super stoked I could upgrade the game immediately. I did not buy this game for any reason than to have more physical games for my SMT games collection, but the digital PS5 upgrade was a pleasant unexpected surprise, and the gameplay is fun, the story is what it is, and feels like a SMT game should.

My cousin loved it as a Christmas gift.

Originally I wrote a review for this game & my review was around a 3 star. My initial reaction to this game when it released was that it was def NOT worth the $60 price tag. First of all the game is made with UNITY which lets be real no one likes them anymore. But majorly the games assets to me do not justify paying such a hefty price tag. The game is really not long at all, at most if you are a speed reader you could probably finish the game within 25 hours with minimal grinding. If you are going for the platinum run you might be around 70 hours. I ended up rebuying this game after my initial return back in 2022, I paid $20.00 because it was on black Friday sale and at this price point I felt a little better knowing what I was getting myself into as well as where my money was going. But to summarize a long drawn out explanation Story 7/10 Characters 10/10 Difficulty 2/10 Visuals 9/10 If you can get this game for a good price its def worth playing.

Do not go into this game expecting a Persona-style game in terms of story and gameplay and you will be fine. Instead the gameplay mechanics of this game follows the Shin Megami Tensei series of games where you and your party explore a dungeon and fill in the map as you explore the dungeon battling demons along the way. Story wise it does take a while for things to pick up, but when things do pick up you’re in for a ride. Overall this is a pretty great game.

The beginning of the game is pretty slow, but it almost sets the pace for the mellow gameplay and exploration. I feel obligated to say this because Persona 5 has spawned a fanbase completely separate from SMT and even older persona games, but this is *not* going to be your next Persona 5 experience. This is a return to the classic dungeon exploration, with similar, yet fresh, rpg battles you'd see in other SMT games. The characters are stylish and the soundtrack is fantastic. Although I was originally confused when a Soul Hakcers sequel was announced, I'm not at all disappointed with the result. I recommend this game.

Arrived early and well packaged. As for the game, it was a good and fun 40 hour+ RPG. Do not expect Persona 5 standards of quality when it comes to the dungeons and story. However, the characters’ personalities and the gameplay are what kept me playing. SH2 was my first Shin Megami Tensei game, which may have contributed to my enjoyment of the game, as I judged the product for what it is instead of comparing it to its derivatives. I loved Ringo and the gang, the Sabbath system, and the demon collecting the most. 7/10
