No you no longer need xbox live gold to play

Should i buy the disc or the save the world version on the free fortnite?

The disc is only for collector's because most people selling them already used the Save The World code.

It's not good single player once you progress past the first few hours. Even before then you will have to grind for resources twice as much as people playing coop. I would not get it for single player.
