A trip back in time with wonderful results
I really appreciated watching this movie. Being a Coloradan I was thrilled to see the filming in Denver. I wish Colorado had made our statue in the US capitol of Glenn Miller. This movie reminds me of his amazing talent and the significant contribution to US Morale during World War II. Jimmy Stewart and June Haver were both true movie stars

Glenn Miller gets the Hollywood treatment.
Big band legend Glenn Miller gets the Hollywood treament of his life in this wonderful film starring Jimmy Stewart as the ill-fated band leader and June Allyson as his wife,Helen.I say the Hollywood treatment because that's exactly what this is, as the truth is sprinkled sparsely throughout. But the story after all is what makes or breaks a film and despite the inconsistencies that abound here(which are oblivious to the uninformed viewer) it comes across very well and manages to at least give us the essence of the man in question in a very entertaining fashion.Henry Morgan who plays Glenns' close friend Chummy McGregor is portrayed as having knew Glenn almost all of his life.In real life Glenn first met Chummy in 1932 when playing with the Smith Ballew band. Also Glenn is portrayed as a kind of a dreaming adolescent while Chummy comes across as the stronger of the two.In real life the opposite was true.Glenn generally knew what he wanted while Chummy was very dependant on Glenn.George Simon, the famous Downbeat critic and writer of various books on big bands including Glenn himself(he was a close personal friend of his),said the most true portrayal was by June Allyson. The love and bond between the two on film was the same as in real life.Jimmy Stewart he said did a great portrayal of...Jimmy Stewart.Overall I think I have to agree with Mr.Simons' assessment,as much as I like Mr.Stewarts' body of work. The only other drawback here is the film itself. It has NOT been remastered. If they had remastered it the numerous minor artifacts would have been gone and the picture would have been a little cleaner and much crisper. But they used a pretty good print so it is at least more than adequate. The most important and best thing about this film however is the music. That wonderful Glenn Miller music using the original arrangements and played in studio by alot of members of the original band,is here in all its' glory. You more than once find your self tapping your feet and singing along when the musical interludes arrive. And to help things along we get appearances by some of the original players in the real life of Glenn Miller like musicians Ben Pollack,Gene Krupa and Louis Armstrong. As I said the story in general comes across very well and in the end as a crying June/Helen is listening to a Christmas concert, minus her screen hubby, there is not a dry in the house. It never fails to tug at the heart strings which is exactly what this movie succeeds at doing best throughout its' 113 minute run.I recommend this film highly. It has a good plot that moves along very well all wrapped around the greatest big band music one is ever going to hear as originally arranged by the greatest leader of them all,Glenn Miller.

A movie that captures a very special time
Other reviewers have lauded the style and craft of this movie, well-deserved praises to be sure. I've seen this movie many times throughout my life, usually on TV, and I never tire of it: wonderful music, fine acting and great pacing combine to make the experience a joy not found in many other "biopics." There are two things that set this film apart from others like it, particularly "The Benny Goodman Story" which is a fine film in its own right. One is Jimmy Stewart's tasteful, low-key portrayal of this American icon, the other is the deft manner if which director Anthony Mann captures the spirit and memories of a very unique and special chapter in modern US history. The movie is a celebration of Miller's life but also of the spirit of the country as a whole. Times were hard for many Americans throughout the 1930's; a little-known fact of that time was that good musicians could actually find paying work if the timing was right. The film's on-going joke about knowing a "friendly pawn shop" was reality for lots of people, not just down-and-out musicians, and Mann understood this and emphasized the struggles of Glenn and Helen Miller far more than their successes. In fact, Miller's sudden rise to fame after years of playing dance halls and movie theaters is given barely 15 minutes of total screen time. This was partly to avoid boring the 1950's movie audiences, most of whom knew that part of Miller's story very well, but Mann also seemed concious of the timelessness of this tale, which he kept tightly focused on Miller and his loving wife right up to the story's tragic end.Musicians and music historians can still learn much from this film: Miller was the first true star bandleader, even more so than Goodman and Krupa, because of his writing/arranging ability. He wrote the formula for success in the pop music world; it can be said that he invented the genre. His influence on other bandleaders was profound and long-lasting; the modern swing/jazz band still follows his lead in many ways to this day. Of course, Miller's greatest attribute was his apparent normalcy: he was not a star instrumentalist like Louis Armstrong or Krupa, and he was not the star of his band; the band's music was the always the star of the show.My favorite scene is the buildup to the band's breakout performance at the Avalon Ballroom, which simply shows Miller late at night toiling away at his manuscripts ("charts" in the music biz) for the new, "radical" arrangement of "Moonlight Serenade." This song was as familiar to audiences in the 1950's as the Beatles' "She Loves You" or "Hey Jude" is to baby-boomers, and the scene plays to that by building the arrangement section by section, instrument by instrument, with the final layer added only when they cut to that opening night performance. It still gives me chills, it's that well done. For $10 American, the DVD is well worth it. You'll enjoy this one more than once, guaranteed.
