OK, but not really for Sinatraphiles
This is a nice book chocked mostly with secondary information that Sinatraphiles have seen before. Written well, but with not very many insights. A better book is Pete Hamill's "Why Sinatra Matters" (It's the songs). We agreed when I spoke to him at the Sinatra conference at Hofstra some years ago that Frank is about the songs--mainly the songs with Riddle, May and Jenkins in the great 50s Capitol period.Lehman doesn't pull any punches. He talks about the good, the bad and the ugly sides of Frank. A very complex guy, as so many artists are. And he was a great artist. One interesting observation is how Frank talked tough, blue collar, with a Jersey accent, and yet sang like a PhD in English. So eloquent. I noticed that very early. It's as though his artistic inner self came out only when he sung. It also came out in his great kindness and generosity to others he exhibited at times--often anonymously. For me, Frank is the lonely guy singing those "Wee Small Hours" songs and the ultimate swinger singing "I Get a Kick out of You" and "Tramp." That's how I remember him.
