Can't remember anything earth shattering that I learned from this book but it was worth the money and time and written by the most respected hip hop journalist ever

Nelson George writes about the art form, history, and influence of hip hop with great passion and intensity
Nelson George writes about the art form, history, and influence of hip hop with great passion and intensity. Although the book is not necessarily a chronological arrangement of hip hop's greatest moments it does touch on every aspect of hip hop's short, yet extremely diverse, timeline. Ranging from the early B-Boys and Girls of the Bronx to contemperary "gangster rap" from the likes of Jay-Z, DMX, Puff Daddy, Wyclef Jean, and Busta Rhymes. George does great job of intertwining pure facts and his own personal, sometimes not so popular, opinions of hip hop. It is evident throughout the book that George's passion and knowledge of hip hop is second to none, which makes for quite the enlightening read. Definitely would recommend to hip hop connoisseurs and beginners alike looking to get an idea of what hip hop is truly all about. Overall a very high quality book.

Excellent Overview
Nelson George has written several books on Hip Hop and African-American popular culture, all of which are worth reading. This book is particularly good for the clarity of thought evident in the writing. It is an assessment of the overall position of Hip Hop as an American cultural phenomenon branching out to the rest of the world. It provides a neat and insightful stock take of what Hip Hop was about in the late nineties for academic purposes, but is written in an easy to digest style that suits readers of a non academic background too. It is a good book to read to get a good idea of how Hip Hop evolved from a localised phenomena to a wider cultural movement. It is enlivened by the author explaining his viewpoint, and not just presenting a dry account of facts.
