Miracles: Is Belief in the Supernatural Irrational? (VeriTalks)

Excellent Defense of Miracles and Much More.
John Lennox is one of the most articulate, well-prepared apologists for the Christian faith from a technical, scientific perspective that I have read. He is clear and simplifies the issues so that they are accessible to the technically oriented as well as the general reader. In this booklet, he is engaging an audience at Harvard University on the subject of miracles. In the process, he investigates Hume and other opponents of miracles on their own turf and in a respecful way, addresses their arguments with counter-arguments. In order to do all of this, he begins with a discussion and comparison of Naturalism vs a Christian world view. He points out several confusions in terminology and other concepts. He then makes a strong case for the reality of God's involvement not only in the beginning, but also in the here and now. This book contains a good argument and support of belief in miracles. But it is much more because he uses evidence of information in the cosmos along with many other scientific and mathematical evidences showing the a loving God has in fact been involved in the creation and sustaining of the cosmos and life and thus makes miracles not only possible, but a genuine occurrence in life. I have read C.S. Lewis's book on Miracles and it is outstanding. Lennox's book is much the same but covers a much wider area in his defense of miracles. It is a short booklet and well worth the read.

In Brevity Is Strength
This short book is from a talk given by Lennox at Harvard, including the text of his remarks and Q&A. As always, he makes a convincing case for his topic with facts, reason and humor. What distinguishes this book from others is its necessarily limited content because of the lecture and discussion format. It won't replace the other fine and more comprehensive books on this topic, but it greatly helps the reader prepare to defend and explain the Christian view of miracles in the kind of limited opportunity most likely to be encountered. It also is an excellent way for the curious seeker to get an overview that might lead to deeper exploration.

Powerfully Clear
The true measure of any lecture or pamphlet is whether you are relieved it is over or you you are compelled to search for more. The moment I finish this review I will be looking for more.Professor Lennox has crafted a message that easily understood by anyone and which will still challenge the thinking of the most highly educated. His appeal for a simple and rational approach to the question of miracles will be a compelling challenge for any agnostic and even for he open-minded atheist.

Convincing defense that Christian faith is based on facts and that pursuing the truth is possible and rewarding
I like the honest way Dr. Lennox answers questions about truth. His friendships and conversations with people who hold opposite viewpoints make his arguments authentic and more convincing.I recommend this book to everyone who thinks Christian faith is not based on facts and that believing the truth of Jesus means you set aside logical thinking. Dr. Lennox shows convincingly that the opposite is true.

Intellectually honest support for Theism and Miracles
I keep rereading this book to acquire the ammunition I need to have meaningful conversations with atheists. The author's arguments in support of God and miracles is as good as, or maybe the best, I have ever read. I have been testing theism for over seventy years and the subjective proof of my testing is extremely positive! However, it is not often that I find any way to explain my results in ways that atheists can understand. John Lennox, in his book Miracles has helped me with this endeavor more than any other I have read.Jimmie Ray Yoes, author of Seventy Meditation Lessons from My Universe

Brilliant
This book contains many excellent ideas and responses to key objections by those opposed to theism and Christianity. The arguments are simple, and though I've heard many of them before, they respond to the same objections raised by atheists for the past several decades. The arguments are concise and easy to follow, and I absolutely recommend this book to everybody.

Miracles
Good book and gives concise meaning to what a miracle is. It is something that occurs outside of created norms. That's what makes it a miracle. Dr Lennox explains to us miracles come in several shapes and forms ranging from giving someone a much needed Bible to the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Christ.

As with all of Lennox writings, you will find ...
As with all of Lennox writings, you will find challenges to and reason and justifications for his positions. He never fails to address the worthwhile aspects of our being and often surprises us in making a case for those things which others reject out of hand. You will never fail to come out smarter for having subjected yourself to his interesting and highly reasoned presentations.

Slightly misleading title
Not quite what I was expecting from the title of this book, perhaps I should have read some reviews. This is basically an account of a lecture delivered by John Lennox at Harvard University. I was expecting that he would look at biblical miracles, however the book looks at reasons for faith and having outlined his reasons looks at the resurrection of Jesus( the only miracle he deals with). If you haven’t read any of his previous books then this is a reasonable way to start, it’s only 56 pages. I’ve heard him speak several times in my church so I had a good idea what he would say in the book. The content is good but obviously not as detailed as a longer book.

From the supreme Lennox intellect ...
This is a book created from Professor John Lennox's teaching. It is very helpful; scientifically analytical and spiritually insightful. However it may benefit from being turned into a second edition where it is more properly recognisable as a book, than as a transcript.
