Outstanding as usual
I’m gonna have to break down and buy the $200 set of all of CJ boxes books I just eat them like candy went to the other got a couple more stacked up on my Kindle. They’re always great and they don’t disappoint and they’re unusual and well written and so on Enjoy.

Very good story from a very reliable author...
Had this book on hand for quite awhile and finally decided to read it. I had read other Joe Picket books in the past and liked them so I knew this book should be just as good.Interestingly enough I was about halfway through Winterkill when I noticed that my cable company offered a new series called Joe Pickett on demand. Of course I had to binge the first seven episodes offered and was really concerned when I realized that Spectrum had withheld the final three episodes for a later drop. A week or so later those three became available and I quickly made time to finish the series. The first seven episodes, based on two early Joe Pickett books, introduced Joe and his family (dog included) and the episodes were reliably entertaining. Naturally you were left hanging and made to wait for the final three episodes. Those final three are reminiscent to the season three cliffhanger final episode of Yellowstone and were just about as good.So I recommend that you read the C. J. Box series of Joe Pickett books and or binge the Joe Pickett 10 episode series on Spectrum. Both are excellent forms of entertainment!!!

Reminds me of Thomas Hardy
C.J. Box excels at creating atmosphere and suspense as well as memorable characters, such as Nate Romanowski. He also has a knack for denying his readers the happy endings they hope for after struggles and valiant efforts by Joe Pickett and his wife Marybeth. Thomas Hardy was another author in thie vein. One critic recounted throwing one of Hardy's novels against the wall because the ending was so maddeningly painful. But Box is not telling fairy tales. His characters are real people with real faults and weaknesses but a determination to do right in the face of true evil. The stories are thoroughly engrossing and Box's writing gets better with each outing. However, I must say that after finishing Winterkill, I felt some hesitancy about launching into the next novel in the series right away, after the emotional stress of this one.I live in a small town surrounded by BLM and USFS lands, and I'm familiar with many of the issues Box writes about and the violent emotions they can arouse. This is what will keep me coming back.

Good drama
Many individual plots within the main story

Western Justice
A strong novel that touches on many of today’s topics; the hate of “others,” the mistrust of government, and the harm that egocentric people in office can do are all included. In the novel, western justice has a solution to stop the problem. In reality, nice little cures would probably do more harm than good. But novels are novels. The author and readers at least got to have fantasy justice in a fantasy world.

Certainly the best!!
Fantastic read which opens with you in the thick of the action and never lets you go. Also this is the book where we first meet Nate Romanowski, Joe Pickett's long term, and mysterious friend. It's winter and after the murder of Lamar Gardiner, Joe is forced to defend his actions, butt heads with rogue agents, and find his foster daughter who has disappeared. It's a well-written story which keeps you turning pages as you ride along with Joe to get to the bottom of yet another murder. But all is not as it seems and things don't become clear until towards the end of the story. It took me a couple of days to get through it, only because of interruptions. Not the first book I've read by Box, but certainly the best.No problems with recommending this amazing story.
