Works well for years
it looks like a lot of tape but unfurled its volume is appropriate for a 50-gallon tank. My experience with the previous batch indicates that it is effective for years. The one thing I did not do was maintain it well - it should be rinsed every month or two, depending on mud buildup. Highly recommended.

Great product, but if you already have this in your filter, no need to buy again
Doing a major clean on the pond and already had some of this in my Savio Waterfall Filter unit (great, BTW - don't hesitate to buy one) from some years ago, but thought it might need replacement. Of course, you won't find anything written on the contrary by Savio that you can just use the old, but it takes a while for the bacteria to regroup on the new material, and I'm experiencing that now. It will be up to snuff in a couple months, but really, I should have used what I had before. They haven't changed material or design since my original purchase. For the first time users, this is great material, because it provides a huge amount of surface area to collect bacteria. I wouldn't use anything else.

Best Filter Media
I used to have lava rock in my biofilter box. It was SO heavy and made taking it out and rinsing it really hard and even harder getting it back in where it belonged. With SpringFlo you just hold it over the box and let it unwind. You don't have to use it all if you don't need it. You will need something to weight it down though, or a bag or something to put it in. When we first started using it, it was stringing out of the waterfall. Once weighted down it stays put and colonies of bacteria started forming on it really quickly. I won't need to buy any filter media for a long, long time.

More surface area
I used this to replace bio balls in my waterfall spillway and pressurized filter. So far so good.Update-11/13/2021: Wow!I turned off my pump to clear some algae off my waterfall. When I turned it back on, the water looked brownish. I opened the water spillway (without turning off the pump) and started pulling the media out to clean it. I really should have turned off the pump. This media stopped so much muck from reentering the pond. It was seriously thick. Bio balls and a filter pad got no where near this. I heartily endorse this filter media. I will however remember to turn off the pump.

SpringFlo ribbon
SpringFlo filter ribbon,This is a superior product by design. I have had a waterfall and pond at my home for over 20 years. My waterfall originally included the springflo ribbon. Over those years I have experimented with different material in my filter bags inside the waterfall. I can say that the springFlo is by far is a superior product. It keeps the water very clean and provides a safe environment for my fish.

Smaller than shown
The amount of media you get in a spool has definitely gotten smaller. I feel like I got a half of a roll and not a full one. I guess they followed the food industry and downsized the product and charge you 2x the amount.

SpringFlo Bio Ribbon
I ordered ribbon to use in pond filter. Works fine but is incredibly messy to clean. Switched back to Lava Rock in home made filters from this green stuff. Lava Rock is easy to use and works well with my 2500 gallon pond. I talked with the local pool store and they said they stopped using the Bio Ribbon about five years ago because it just took to long to clean. I wish I had talked to them first.
