I didn't really feel like wearing a brace all of the time
For years I struggled with back pain. After hearing enough of my complaining, my wife forced hard headed old me to go see a chiropractor. After seeing the chiropractor, I learned two things: 1.) My back was severely swollen due to the amount of time I spend using it, 2.) i had a 4mm slipped disc. Of course, there were several recommendations: wear a brace, ice it, do more back exercises to further strengthen it, etc. I didn't really feel like wearing a brace all of the time, so I opted to icing it on a regular basis and working out my back more. Putting ice in a bag, on top of a towel just wasn't doing the trick for me. It was either way too cold or not cold enough. So, I asked my chiropractor for some advice and he pointed me to this product. I'm glad he did. Pros: - You can freeze it or heat it. I keep my in the deep freeze but on occasion, I will throw it in the microwave to heat it. The grains do not freeze like water, so when you pull it out of the freezer, it's not stiff. You can also put the back wrap directly on your skin without it being too cold or uncomfortable. It's the perfect temperature to give you relief and reduce the swelling. The grains also do not get overly hot when you place the back wrap in the microwave. I'm sure if you left it in there for an hour something awry would occur, but I typically heat it for 2-3 minutes with no issues whatsoever. - It's adjustable. I use this back wrap primarily on my back, but have also used it on my thighs after a softball game. - It completely covers my lower back. The back wrap is really the perfect size. It's not large and bulky enough to prevent you from being in a seated position and it's not too small that you don't get full lower back relief. Cons: - The velcro slips from time to time. The only problem I have with this back wrap is that the velcro really doesn't stay in place. The slightest movement seems to unstick the velcro strap. While most of the time when i'm wearing it I'm seated or laying down, I could see how this could be a problem for someone wearing it while walking around or standing. Overall, I'm very happy with this back wrap and would recommend it for anyone looking to ice/heat their back for relief.

Stays hot/warm a pretty long time. Longer than most.
I've had lower back issues on and off for a couple weeks now. I have other moist heat packs but non had the strap to hold it in place so I could move around. This heat pack works great for moistness and the amount of time it stays hot. However I'm taking a star away as the Velcro tip does not adhere to the strap very well. I ended up wrapping the strap around itself after placing thru the tension loop like Huck Finn would his rope belt.

This is our Go To heating pad and LOVE it
This heating pad is the BEST and it’s AMAZING. I have had a Bed Buddy for years and years and just recently bought another because I leant ours to my daughters boyfriend when he hurt is back, he loves it. I have bought different ones from others and none compare. Most of the others are filled with rice. Rice is fine and okay but it’s nit the same as the Bed Buddy. Rice doesn’t provide that deep moist heat. Rice has a little moist heat but nothing like the Bed Buddy. If your in pain, sore, achy you really want deep moist heat, ithis provides amazing relief. I has been suffering with back pain for 15 years and this heating pad is amazing. I have never used it cold so I can’t say what that is like. This size is great, nice and wide and long. The strap is nice, I don’t always strap it around me unless I’m using it while standing, but I do use it to help line It up for my back, especially if I’m going vertically along the spine. It does smell the first few times you use it, but the smell does go away after a few uses.

Horrendous Smell and heat issues.
First I need to establish that I have been using the exact same wrap for the last 2 years or more and it works great. It is just in the last 3 months, that the old one has been emitting a strange odor every time I heated it, that made me decide to buy a new one (the heat retaining capacity has not changed in all these months and years, mind you, just the smell). I did see some reviews from other users about the smell when they bought it and used it, but I pegged that to the smell that I got from my old one, and assumed that the reviewers' who complained probably had more sensitive nasal passages than I had, and I should be able to manage it for a while. Boy, was I wrong ! For one, it emitted a smell that was vastly different from my more than 2 year old Back Wrap Buddy. Secondly, the smell was very close to something that I did not want to have memories of. A close family relative (bless his soul) had passed away recently, and I was present during the process when his preserved body was being prepared for his final journey. The smell of heating this back wrap, brought my memories of being in that room. I dont want to say that all Carex Back Wrap Buddy's are bad, because, I decided that dealing with the smell of the old one (it is one step below horrendous), is better than the smell of this new one. And I did NOT have any issues with smell for the first two years of using my old one. So, they had obviously made some change to the product in the meanwhile, and is causing this smell. Equally important, the new one was not retaining the same amount of heat as the old one. When I heat the new one to the same time as the old one, for one it does not seem warm enough, and secondly, whatever little heat it has, it dissipates it very quickly. I'm either looking for a new brand or making my own rice bags as another reviewer had suggested. It's a shame, because the same brand's back wrap has served me so well the last few years.

Great quality and durability
Great heat pad. I love that it only takes 2 minutes in the microwave and your good to go. Amazing how long the pad stays warm. Ive used it for many things from aches and pains to just having it warm to keep me warm going to sleep at night. Ive had many different styles of the heating pads from this brand and I will recommend this brand hands down. A+++

Feels great but the fastening idea failed
I have chronic back pain and use the original Bed Buddy. I've been using it over 10 years and never had any problems. Inside both Buddy's is some sort of rice or barley or other. When heated it doesn't smell great to some people, but I don't think it stinks. I'll be honest I kind of like it, it's soothing to my senses. Maybe because I associate that smell to the warm, back pain relief. So until recently decided that I wanted one that I can use while being mobile and having my hands free. Seeing this bed buddy, I thought, how convenient and easy. Because until I found this one, I would use my original Buddy strapped to my back using my back brace, but in order for me to put it on, I had to lay my brace on the bed, lay the buddy on top of that, then lay on top of both, and then strap it to myself. While this Buddy looks pretty self explanatory, there are no instructions on how to fasten the strap, no FAQs to answer any questions. There are, however, warming and cleaning instructions on the tag attached to the Buddy. They had an amazing idea with this product but did not execute it well. You have a back sized (17"x7.5") Bed Buddy, one side has an elasticized strap (26" long unstretched and 2" wide) and the other side has a sort of D-Ring. The belt is supposed to fasten "hook and loop style" like Velcro. On the end of the belt there is a 2"x2" Velcro hook piece. Well my first thought was to pass the belt through the D-Ring, pull and fold back over then press the Velcro to the belt, however it doesn't stick to the belt. So I have to pull it tighter to get it to fasten to the blue Buddy, it fit but since it was a little tight, I thought that couldn't be right because I'm kind of on the thin side and I thought there was no way this is one size fits all since a larger person would likely suffocate. So instead of folding over, I tried just pulling the belt through the D-ring, then straight across my back, and pressing onto the Buddy. It was wonky and didn't feel right. The strap side of the Buddy felt securely pressed on my back but the D-ring side was loose and when I move around (getting up and down from my chair, or walking around) it would slide along the ring and I'd have to pull and tug at the ring to get the Buddy back in place. I've attached pics showing the 2 different ways to fasten so you have an idea what I mean. I'm going to keep it since I do like how this Buddy is larger and has great back coverage. I will probably sew a Velcro loop patch on the belt so I can fasten it the "fold over way" since that felt most secure and I felt the heat evenly across my back. Too bad they didn't just make that way in the first place...

The product performed as described. Yes, it helped ...
The product performed as described. Yes, it helped my symptoms of backache. I want to keep using the product but am apprehensive about warming instructions. I find you have to heat Carex Bed Buddy to a maximum of 2 minutes to get warm enough to place against back. Unfortunately, instructions specify DO NOT HEAT LONGER THAN 2 MINUTES IN MICROWAVE IN THE EVENT OF FIRE. I find that alarming about a product sold on Amazon can catch fire or explode? It does not get warm enough on 1 1/2 minutes or 1 3/4 minutes in the microwave, the Buddy needs a full 2 minutes. Please comment or advise. Thank you. I realize I can not leave product unattended in microwave for a moment.

Highly recommended
This heat pad retains it's heat well and is easy to put on. I've had my last heat pack from this brand for over 10 years so figured it was time for a new one (but often use both). V good for back pain.
