K-19: The Widowmaker

Fantastic
Having been on a submarine and a nuclear engineer, I can say this was as good as can possibly be. Great job on the realities depicted during the transition period between the old diesel subs and early nuclear sub. It depicted the rough conditions and the brave comradery that overcame the environment.

Dramatic and intense but the story took some liberties
I had never heard of this movie but with such great actors headed by Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford I had to watch it (It was also interesting to see a short appearance by the actor Joss Ackland who was in The Hunt For Red October). I admit I was on the edge of my seat at times, especially by the half way point. I mean who wouldn't be when you have no place to escape bad things happening on a submarine? The small downgrade to 4 stars was because I felt the story had too many classic Soviet stereotypical behaviors exhibited by the crew. I can understand if someone cracks under the pressure. No amount of training can fully prepare someone for the emergency these young men faced, but this crisis was dramatic enough without interjecting cliches on what otherwise was a highly skilled crew. After the movie ended I looked up on IMDB and saw that it was based on actual events but it also reported the surviving members of the crew, after reading the script were "so incensed that they sent an open letter ....., expressing their dismay...." Wow, the survivors - to realize this happened - holy toledo!!I was distracted by all the stereotype boxes being checked, so I can't imagine how they felt.To be fair I'm sure eastern countries have their own stereotypes of Americans as being brash, egotistical and arrogant, and although some stereotypes may have some basis in fact I would guess you park that at the door when you enter the highly disciplined environment of a nuclear submarine! For the pinnacle of great submarine drama one only has to watch Das Boot.So - good movie but unnecessary cultural garbage included which I could have done without

Good movie
There is nothing like a good submarine movie. Add a cold war background to it and you've got yourself the recipe for a good movie.K19 is no exception. It's not quite the Hunt for Red October, but it's up there. Plus it has the added benefit of being mostly a true story.Aside from being just a good submarine story though it also really tells the story of how the Soviet Union was smoke and mirrors without nearly the organization and strength it outwardly portrayed. The film is well made, well acted (despite Harrison Ford trying badly to have Russian accent and Liam Neeson sticking with his native Irish half the film. It's a good entertaining movie. Well worth watching.

Unimaginable horror
Fascinating story that feels authentic. Tension builds throughout this tale of a new technology (at the time) nuclear sub that is forced out to sea before it was properly equipped or ready by clueless Soviet generals and admirals. Great acting and sets. The special effects are clever enough to make the 1961 sub seem real. The effects of radiation on the soviet sailors is chilling. The most chilling aspect of this true story is how (once again) we came to an event that nearly led to global thermonuclear annihilation. When you watch this you'll know why this event almost caused that unimaginable tragedy. Highly recommended.

Gripping Drama Based On True Events
This was a long movie at 2 hours and 18 minutes, but held my attention from start to finish. I can't imagine anything that could have been shortened without damaging the story arc and interest factor. I was stunned by the pressure the Soviet Union put on their people to succeed at all costs, even when succeeding meant devastating failure. Silly sounding Russian "accents" aside, this was a well-acted drama based on true events and was well worth the time to watch.

Movie par excellence!
Fantastic film. My 99 y.o. mother remembers the incident. I was a H.S. senior @ the time but was more interested in other things to pay attention to the news. The acting is inspired, and every part of the story is magnificently portrayed. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone H.S. age and above. I'd love to know what Harrison Ford thought about his character as the role differs so much from what he usually plays.

Harrison Ford's Soviet atomic submarine is the Widow-Maker
This film provides an unusually truthful look at the Cold War, when it was in full swing. I don't want to give too much away. But this is not a sugar frosted picture. It is much nearer to the truth. In fact there is good reason to think it's "the truth" about a Soviet's atomic submarine, one a dangerous mission. I highly recommend this film, but there is some graphic description in it which some may find troubling. That said: I highly recommend this film, directed with intelligence, with brilliant acting

American Comrads
Shortly into the film there is an example of Soviet anti-American propaganda that sadly is no different than Democrat propaganda in 2019. I wonder if anybody in America would've predicted that after they survived the Cold War with the Soviet Union that two decades later they would be fighting Socialism at home? The movie wasn't a true submarine movie in the sense of naval warfare, but a Chernoybl type incident on a Russian sub. Heroic men for sure and a great portrayal that the heroes in real life are men who step up when the time comes. Another reason why the war against masculinity is doomed to fail.

True story with good performances coupled with good quality DVD
Good movie based on a true story. Bought this and The Hunt for the Red October at the same time. I know some reviewers complain about Harrison's Ford's Russian accent but contrasting that to Sean Connery and Sam Neil's accent in Red October and Connery/Neal's accent is pretty funny especially Connery's Scottish/Russian accent. I thought that Harrison Ford did a much better job portraying a Soviet Sub Commander than Sean Connery. Connery plays the same role he does in all his movies. The quality of the DVD is very good. It's widescreen so there will be black bars on top and bottom. There are extra feature including the usual "Making of...." Apparently the Producers went to a lot of trouble researching the story and trying to make the K-10 sub as accurate as possible. The trouble they invested into the details really pays off as you get that claustrophobic effect of living in a confining space.I watched both movies a night apart, watching K-19 first then Red October. It was hard to take Red October seriously after the more gritty realism of K-19. I would definitely watch K-19 again at later time but don't feel the same about red October.
