Professional and Thorough; Adults May Find the Questions Sufficiently Challenging, too
I am new to CogAT testing, which some organizations use to identify gifted and talented students who would be candidates for accelerated programs and highly competitive schools. Overall, I feel this book does a thorough, professional job preparing students for CogAT testing. The book first introduces CogAT testing to newbies like myself by explaining 1) what it is, 2) how it is offered and whom to contact if you are interested in CogAt testing where you live, then discusses 3) how to best use the book to prepare your child/student, 4) no-nonsense test prep tips and strategies, and finally offers 5) a few sample questions, 6) a complete practice test, 7) a complete set of practice test sheets which uses fill-in-the-bubbles similar to the sheets used during the actual CogAt test, and 8) answers and (some) explanations to the practice test. Pages are 8.5x11 (standard U.S. letter size) and thus can be easily copied if needed for multiple practice test sessions. The publisher, Origins Publications, also provides bonus challenge questions via email through the company's web site (the URL for the form is provided in the book). The book is also professionally printed and bound. The cover is full color and what one would expect from a professional publication. The interior pages are black and white, like the actual CogAT test I understand. I believe this better prepares students for the actual test. The images in the book are clear with sufficient contrast to properly test the skills of the child rather than their abilities to see color. We must remember that even some gifted children are color blind, and if color images do not have sufficient contrast without color, children with any form of color blindness may not be able to adequately distinguish the elements in the test questions and thus be properly tested. They may, in fact, "fail" for their inability to distinguish color, rather than their true cognitive gifts. The purpose of such books is to accustom students to the CogAT test and its conditions, which include verbal, quantitative and non-verbal skills, stress management, time management, test format, test content, and most of all provide confidence through familiarity. It is interesting to note that this book prepares students for Form 7, which uses pictures to better test non-English speaking students. It is also interesting to note that, although for Kindergarteners, some of the questions in this test may be challenging for adults, too. As an adult, I found the questions sufficiently interesting, particularly the matrices, to check my answers against the answers in the back. My choice was not always correct. LOLThe only weakness that I have found in the book is that some of the answers on the answer sheet do not provide an explanation to better understand why the correct answer is correct. Might be best if all answers featured an explanation.

Black and white questions that resemble the actual exam
As a tutor for this test, I have used most cogat workbooks, and I recommend these books because they are not super costly and you get everything you need in the book to expose a student to the COGAT test. The pictures are not shoddily drawn, which is important if you don’t want a student to get confused unnecessarily when working on a question. These books are engaging to students, but note that the tests are printed in black and white. Some kids work better/ are more engaged with color printed books, but you ultimately want the child to be exposed to black and white like the actual format.

Not the Best, Not the Worst
We purchased three CogAT Practice Tests (Form 7, Level 5/6). This one is acceptable, but not the best (the best is the one by testingmom.com).Even though the graphics are in black and white, they are pretty good (except for in the ‘Paper Folding’ section, those graphics are pretty bad).I think the main thing that bothered me was that there were no answer bubbles, like in the real test, because the students need to practice answering questions the right way, by filling in a bubble. These are the three CogAT Practice Tests we purchased, in order from best to worst (in my opinion):1. Worked for us
This book was helpful. It allowed me to go over the format of the test with my daughter in the months leading up to the test. I think this made her comfortable when it was test time. She got into the gifted program, and Mensa, so if I have to do it again (which I will in two years), I will use the same approach.
