The Second Coming of the KKK: The Ku Klux Klan of the 1920s and the American Political Tradition

A Biased Analysis
This was required reading for my graduate degree. I was hoping for a historical account of the rise and fall of the KKK in the 1920s. The book delivered on some of this, but it also delivered way too much social commentary that sounded very much like modern-day activism, not an unbiased analysis. The not-so-veiled swipes at today's populist conservative movements were unnecessary and greatly-affected my ability to see the author as anything but biased and lacking in credibility. This book will live in my bookshelf, but I highly-doubt it will be opened again.

The Ku Klux Klan was once respectable
I am fairly conversant with American and European studies that address nationalistic and populist movements of the 19th and 20th Century but this book was an eye-opener. I can't but help reading this book in the light of current political realities and that is precisely one of Dr. Linda Gordon's strengths since she too is aware of the "double vision" problem. Dr. Gordon is careful to distinguish helpful and informative comparisons but also to delimit comparisons that are misleading. I recommend this be read alongside with another important study by Polish historian Joanna Michlic's Poland's Threatening Other: The Image of the Jew form 1880 to the present.

Terrifying. And a good read.
Frightening! A book for our times. I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the current political and racial/ethnic divide. But I was truly horrified at how closely the doctrine of the revived Klan of the twentieth century resembles the America First movement.

Uve read better books on KKK
Disappointing account. So much basic info left out...especially the Indiana Klan. Mentions city rally but not real influence in Indiana or impact of its downfall.

This book is important to read because the circumstances that brought all this about in the 1920's seem to be happening again. if you pay attention to current events you will see the similarities. Very interesting read.

Honestly, this book was hard for me to purchase. However, after reading this book, and understanding the viewpoint in which it was written in, it was eye opening. I learned pieces of history I never discussed in school before and is probably "why" my college professor required this book. It will definitely stir up some conversation.

but very useful for what I am digging into
A more scholarly book than expected, but very useful for what I am digging into, i.e., the two leading founders/organizers from Alabama, and their ancestral culture and ties to earlier KKK and to "secret societies". .

Five Stars
A timely and brilliant synthesis from one of our most important social movement historians.

the inner story of the cardboard monster that was the Klan in the '20's
quite good historical view of the 2nd coming of the Klan in the '20's-who then proceed to destroy themselves from within because of ego and greed-in spite of fairly substantial public/political sympathy..
