The Equalizer (Feature) [Blu-ray] [Region B] [2014]

The Equalizer film, Blu Ray, BBFC Certificate 15, Region B PAL. A very well made thriller, trimmed for a 15 Certificate, and the better for it! I saw this when it was first released, and the savage, brutal, violence appalled me, going beyond even a Steven Seagal revenge thriller! I bought this after number 2 , also a 15 Certificate, which i preferred over number 1, and still do. Knowing it had edits which hadn't enraged cinema and home media viewers, and in the press, as was the case in the 80's and 90's as the BBFC were zealous in protecting the viewing public from director George Romero, Steven Seagal, Lethal Weapon 2 - and thereby creating a huge market in imported US laserdiscs and Region 1 dvds without cuts. Pros: Denzel Washington, atmospheric music score, cinematography, action set pieces. Negative: taking on the Russian mafia...and winning? Really? The Russian military fought the Chechens for 10 years, in one campaign, and those people are hard! So a far fetched adventure, although enjoyable. No Stuart Copeland Equalizer TV series theme tune in the end titles. (The Equalizer FSK 18 uncut version is available in Region 2 PAL Germany, and Region US 1/A. But be wary if your multi-regional Blu Ray player will play multi-regional DVDs as well, as my 3 - 2018 Samsung, older LG, and German Panasonic DMP BDT180 don't! I did read of a mortified UK buyer who complained that his didn't play, and was told that the German FSK 18 did not play because he didn't have a German player!) Denzel Washington recently agreed to make 2 more Equalizer films.

Really enjoyed the equalizer

Excellent film, I can remember watching the original tv series in the 80s and I was pleased they had made a film, even more pleased that Denzel Washington was playing the lead. This film is made really well, and Denzel is brilliant in the role, he has since made two sequels which are also very good.

It’s vital to enter into this film dropping expectations of the original Equaliser series, which was a far more mild mannered affair. The emphasis in this movie is much more on the vengeance and death than kindness and support… but it drives along so efficiently and with a typically engaging performance from Washington, that the ‘Death Wish’ similarities can be easily forgiven. Mood in first half builds Washington’s tone and character, as we see a solitary and private man who clearly has compassion and cares for the security of those around him. His conversations in his night time venue of a quiet 24 hour diner with Chloe Grace Moretz’ character are a satisfying slow build into his world. As things progress and he is compelled to mete out his own form of justice (normally using various tools from the hardware store where he works..), the movie changes into a more grim vengeance themed tone as the deadly skills from Washington’s pre-hardware store career are given full reign. It’s the most exploitational movie I can recall Washington take on, but he still brings his trademark humanity to the role helping make what could have been hard to swallow actually an enjoyable journey to take. The action is brutal and exciting, but while ably and efficiently depicted in a kinetic style, it doesn’t feel truly like anything we haven’t seen before. Even the baddies are the current Hollywood stalwart – Russian mob. That said, the final showdown has some of the more inventive ways of despatching bad guys than have been seen for a while. No classic then, but pretty enjoyable nonetheless, and if they do a sequel, I’ll be in line. 6/10

BEST FILM OF A GENERATION

This is a much better film than many reviews would suggest. Yes, it is all-action filled, yes, there are graphic scenes and yes, the storyline could be richer, but overall this remains a good film. Washington is his usual menacing, good guy, self. His character originating in the now familiar background of a retired CIA "technician", seeking to lead a quiet life, until stirred into action by witnessesing an assault on a young prostitute. Washington easily carries off this type of role. Throughout the film the viewer remains curious - "just how will he deal with this, or that situation". The prostitutes story - played by the upcoming Chloe Grace Moretz, an actress who despite her youth, can certainly deliver a good line - could have been much better used. The viewer is drawn into her life very briefly. We just begin to get curious and involved in her background and life, expecting to hear and see much more of this character. She is the catalyst which draws Washington out of his quiet life back into "traffic". Despite the importance of her role at this point and the developing and unlikely friendship between her and Washington, she is sidelined far too quickly and film then develops without her. This leaves the viewer wanting "answers". True, the end of the film does try to "catch up" with her character, but really the film should have made much more use of such a talented actress. Nonetheless, this is still very watchable stuff. Some critics have been unfairly damming of the film. I often wonder just what these people actually expect from a film. Little wonder why so many films have so much better viewer reviews than so-called professional critics! This film is fiction. It is not intended to reflect true life characters. It is not a biopic, nor is it factual. It IS entertaining. Forget the sceptics. This is Washington at top level. A very good film which, with just a little more thought about the script, could so easily have been a really great film. Sit back, watch and enjoy!

Denn McCalls Sinn für Gerechtigkeit ist stark- wer ein Problem hat, sich nicht wehren kann......... gegen den sich das Schicksal verschworen hat, dem kein anderer und niemand hilft- der lernt die geheimen Fähigkeiten McCall` s kennen. Meinung, mein!Fazit: " Ich hab` nicht viel Zeit- du hast gar keine. " Ruhig inszeniert und dadurch ungemein interessanter Spannungsaufbau. Ein Racheengel, den sich insgeheim viele Menschen wünschen. Weil sie selber zu schwach sind, trotz eventuellen Gerechtigkeitssinnes. Oder genug Mut. Wären sie nur ein einziges Mal richtig ehrlich. Zu sich selber. Ich habe mir THE EQUALIZER praktisch direkt zweimal reingezogen. Weil ich so gar nicht und nicht glauben konnte, was ich da sah. Denzel Washington spielt die Rolle perfekter als perfekt. Der, der sich einsetzt für diejenigen, denen sonst keiner zuhört. Unkonventionell, derb und trocken. Und konsequent- mit einmaliger Mimik. Intensiv und überzeugend. Objektiv und distanziert. Er kennt dieses Mädchen kaum. Aber er hilft ihr- WEIL ER ES KANN. Einen Weg aus ihrem Leben zu finden. Mit Herz..... und Brutalität. Was, verdammt, ist daran falsch? " Was ist passiert? " - " Hab` in was Dummes geschlagen. " Völlig egal, völlig gleich...WER aufräumt. Superman...Ironman....Herkules........ oder was weiß ich für ein, unser, Held. Hauptsache, er TUT was. Hauptsache, es tut überhaupt einer mal was. Da schreien wir doch HURRA! Und ziehen diese selbstlosen Menschen, Mitmenschen nicht in den Dreck. Ist das so schwer? Zu begreifen?
