Immediately effective at calming my reactive rescue dog
We have a very reactive French bulldog, who is a rescue and was a former stray. It means she's always alert and clingy, barking immensely at dogs or loud door knocks. Having switched on the Adaptil Calm plug-in diffuser for 10mins, she semed a little dozy. An hour later she's fully asleep. I wasn't sure if she'd still be responsive, but when a tupperware dropped off the kitchen side, making a loud bang, she was up and awake in a second! We'll keep using this and see how it goes but I'm already immediately impressed with how effectively this has calmed her down.

Good product
I got this Adaptil plug in to use over the bonfire period. Plugged it in 2 weeks before to hopefully start taking affect ready for the first fireworks. Our Patterdale terrier is 2 and half, and is usually very playful and energetic with rest sessions lasting only 10 minutes before being too curious and getting up to nosy around again. After around 2 days of plugging the Adaptil in, he was a lot calmer and was lying on his dog bed much more - normally he is glued to us on the couch for attention, and wasn't as bothered by neighbours coming home etc. By the end of the first week he was less subdued and mopey but still nice and calm. When the fireworks started he definitely was his usual self plodding round rather than getting scared and hiding. We did also make sure to have the curtains closed and the TV sound turned up a little more. I've only given it 4 stars though, and this is because the calming effect definitely didn't last in him once we took him outside for walks, not even enough for a quick walk. If a firework went off 1 minute after going out of the house, he stopped dead it his tracks and refused to walk further. I'd consider next year buying him a collar as well to see if that helps. Secondly, it didn't help when there was a thunder storm and lightening. Perhaps this was too loud and scary for any amount of pheromone to override.

From a Believer To a Protector: Why I've Moved Beyond Adaptil in 2026
This is a story of transformation that turns into a warning. In 2024, I witnessed the strikingly positive effect Adaptil can have but in 2026, I stopped using it immediately due to newly uncovered risks related to the petrochemicals it contains - switching instead to a safer strategy. THE 2024 BREAKTHROUGH: A MOMENT OF PURE RELIEF I’ll be honest: I was a total skeptic for years. After a failed attempt with a puppy in 2015, I had written Adaptil off. But during a stressful vet visit in 2024 for a leg injury, I watched another dog go into a state of crisis. Her stress was so profound - back arched, ears pinned, and eyes wide - that I genuinely interpreted her distress as physical pain. In the waiting room, she walked over to an Adaptil diffuser and took several deep breaths. The change was instant: her spine levelled, her face softened, and she finally settled. In that moment of pure relief, I became a believer. THE 2026 WAKE-UP CALL: CHOOSING SAFETY OVER SYNTHETICS However, as we move through 2026, my perspective has shifted from "what works in the moment" to "what is safe for a lifetime." I uncovered new information that leaves me horrified. Realising what I had been pumping into my home and near my dogs' sensitive respiratory systems actually made me feel sick. I stopped using the product immediately. While my "aha" moment about the power of pheromones was impactful, I cannot ignore the health and environmental risks hiding in Adaptil’s hardware: THE PETROCHEMICAL REALITY: Adaptil uses ISOPARAFFINIC HYDROCARBONS as a base. The thought of my dogs constantly inhaling petroleum-derived chemicals felt at odds with the "natural" peace I was trying to create. HEALTH & SAFETY HAZARDS: Learning that the solution is LETHAL IF INGESTED and an ASPIRATION HAZARD (can cause a chemical pneumonia) and also serious eye irritation was a turning point. SPECIALIST DISPOSAL REQUIRED: Because it is toxic to aquatic life, it must not be thrown in household waste - a major red flag for a product diffusing into the heart of our homes. INCONSISTENT EVIDENCE & HIGH COST: At around £25, This is an expensive trial for people whose dogs are non-responders - and honestly, many dogs fall into that category. Scientific reviews now categorise the evidence as weak to moderate, and completely inconsistent. This aligns with my experience, of it helping one of my dogs but not the another. A PLEA TO THE MANUFACTURER: I am calling on the makers of Adaptil to reformulate this product into something that is truly safe. Pet guardians deserve a way to provide pheromone support without compromising their pet's health or the environment. Please, give us a non-toxic, petroleum-free product that we can use without fear. MY "LAYERED CALM" STRATEGY: BUILDING ON OUR BOND Because Adaptil failed to help my first dog, I realised that true security shouldn't come from a bottle. I developed a "MULTI-LAYERED" APPROACH that builds directly on the bond I have with my dogs. Instead of relying on synthetic pheromones, I now use our connection to create a chemical-free sense of calm. If you are looking for a safer path, here is how I use our relationship to anchor their calm: THE "SAFETY SCENT" & TACTILE ANCHOR: The most powerful pheromone in the world is YOU. I use a T-shirt I’ve recently worn or their favourite familiar blankets. I’ve also introduced the Snuggle Puppy Heartbeat Toy (ASIN: B000C9YHFS), which provides a physical heartbeat an warmth that mimics a mother’s presence. BIO-ACOUSTIC THERAPY: We’ve traded the hum of a diffuser for the science of sound. I play music specifically engineered for canine ears, such as Through a Dog's Ear (ASIN: 1591796423) or the calming arrangements of The Mozart Effect: From Playtime to Sleepytime (ASIN: B00000DA1O). These frequencies are proven to sooth dogs nervous systems naturally. ACTIVE ADRENALINE RELEASE: Stress lives in the body. We now use light play and nose-work activities to help them process adrenaline physically. This turns nervous energy into a game that reinforces their trust in me. FINAL THOUGHT I’m grateful for the "instant calm" Adaptil showed me was possible, but I’m more grateful for the lesson its failure taught me. Our pets trust us to protect them - I’m choosing to KEEP THEIR AIR CLEAN and their calm ROOTED IN OUR BOND. Note: I am more than happy to answer product questions in the Q&A section to help other pet guardians make informed decisions about Adaptil.

Vet recommended, we love it!
BUY IT! We purchased on the advice of our vet, as our 1 year old dachshund has started to wake up every night around 2am to ask to go outside, which is driving us bonkers! Plugged it into our bedroom, where the dog sleeps, and I am staggered to say that the first night he slept straight through, and by day 3, he hasn't even stirred when we have had to get up earlier than usual. Very happy with my purchase which we hope will break the cycle of waking at unusual hours of the night. It's even helping us sleep right through too! Recommend.

Extremely dangerous, toxic and bad for environment
We read the good reviews and thought we’d try this for our anxious dog. I work from home and he sits with me in my office, so I plugged one in there. After a while I developed eye irritation which got worse and worse. I didn’t correlate the diffuser and my eyes for a while, but when the penny dropped, I looked at the information sheet (which I’d previously ignored, as you do) They contain hydrocarbons, which are really bad for the environment! Also, there are danger warnings about its toxicity. It mentions danger to the respiratory tract and ingestion and if swallowed, immediately call a poison centre! It doesn’t mention eye irritation, only when it talks about the ADAPTIL Transportation spray, where in bold, it states CAUSES SERIOUS EYE IRRITATION! If it’s caused irritation to my eyes, has it hurt my dog too? It also states that you should dispose of contents/container at hazardous or specialist waste collection points! Who ever reads all this information and just puts it in the recycling? As much as I adore my dog and want him to have the best life, I didn’t notice any change in his behaviour! My vet had even recommended I try ADAPTIL! We also got the collar for him! I can’t say these products worked at all but I’m seriously concerned that well meaning dog owners will buy this but not realise the toxic fumes they are pumping into their own homes and environment. I took the diffuser out when I realised and slowly my eyes have improved! We’ve been away this weekend and completely forgot about my eyes, until we got home and they started stinging again! So, the pollutant is still in our house, despite unplugging it about 3 weeks ago. I’m now going to try washing the walls. I’ve contacted Amazon and I will be contacting ADAPTIL. Please think seriously about using this product, especially if you have young children: ‘MAY BE FATAL IF SWALLOWED AND ENTERS AIRWAYS’! Also, your pets can’t tell you if their eyes hurt and what if they are chewers? I’ve been through so many bottles of eye drops, he may have suffered in silence! It’s not right! Worst product ever, I’d like to see the data from their clinical trials? Seriously dangerous and shouldn’t be on the market!

Genuinely AMAZED!
Just a snippet of background about my 9 month old ‘Show’ Cocker Spaniel Brenda; to help you understand a little of how genuinely stressful life for her & for us has been since we first got her at 8 weeks old & BEFORE we tried this plug-in device. So please bear with me; this bit is important. Brenda has a serious case of Separation Anxiety, specifically with me. She would constantly HOWL & HOWL & cry whenever she couldn’t either see me, or even touch me. We could even be in the same room, but if she couldn’t physically touch me, she became acutely distressed & cry continuously. Honestly, I couldn’t even go to the bathroom without her, as she would become too distressed & upset. We absolutely do try our best with behavioural training, which is vitally important & necessary always. She completely mastered house-training within about 3-4weeks; which demonstrates just how smart she is & how dedicated we are regarding good behavioural techniques. However , despite our most sincere, dedicated & consistent behavioural efforts, Brenda was still constantly anxious & oftentimes very very distressed when not able to see or touch me. I’ve had many dogs over the years & I’ve never known anything like this; it’s extremely difficult & oftentimes very upsetting for us too. So, to this calming plug-in device: please believe me when I tell you that the moment it was plugged-in, Brenda began to calm immediately, she really did. She has settled so incredibly that I’m absolutely astonished! I really truthfully am. We have changed nothing else at all; I needed to be certain that this plug-in was the only thing that was altered. We continue with the behavioural strategies, just as before. Brenda is so much calmer, to the point where I can now visit the bathroom without her tagging along every time; though she does still usually sit outside the bathroom door waiting for me. But this is a vast improvement (she no longer howls) & we’re working on supporting her to be able to cope with longer & longer periods of time without needing to be able to see me. Sure, I’ll not lie, Brenda is still acutely anxious & does still howl when I go upstairs or leave the house without her. However, her anxious behaviour settled a lot, the moment we plugged this device in. So, if you & your pooch are experiencing similar anxiety issues to Brenda & ourselves, then I’d absolutely 100% recommend that you try one of these plug-in devices alongside good basic behavioural strategies. There are mixed Reviews I know. But I’m telling you with absolute honesty, that this plug-in has helped Brenda & her family beyond compare. Please, do give it a try. I appreciate that they are quite expensive, but the benefits are so wonderful & worth it!

Not value for money
Has not worked on my dog sadly, behaviour has stayed the same despite trialling for around two weeks. Also gets very hot so leaving it on for prolonged periods of time is a worry. Overpriced in my opinion.

It really works ...its brilliant!
I was very sceptical that this product would actually work - but I bought it in sheer desperation as every year my elderly yorkie would get so upset on bonfire night & be shaking & absolutely terrified & was getting worse the older he got. I was worried he would have a heart attack with fright. I didn't plug it in until yesterday morning & come the evening when the bangers & fireworks started he was calm & didn't seem at all bothered. He did get a little bothered for about 10 mins later on but nothing like in past years. I can't believe how good this has been it's brilliant & I highly recommend it ! I will be buying the refills for New Year fireworks !
