Well done Philips
Lovely radio. Looks slightly different to the photo, the mesh covering the speakers is not as dark.Easy to use, 20 presets for dab and 20 for fm. Only 3 preset buttons, you just just flick up or down for the rest. The sound is better than I thought it would be; crisp and clear. I really like the sound and I love the retro styling.I think for £48 you will not find a better 'stereo dab radio'. I highly recommend it.

pleasantly surprised
Well made, nicely finished. Works straight out of the box and sounds surprisingly good for a worktop radio- a bit of bass and reasonable separation of instruments. I've had and heard much worse at higher price points. Pleasantly surprised, well done Philips.*update 2016: had the same problem many others had with the on/off switch becoming inoperable. Complained to Amazon (rather than Philips) who replaced it without argument and so far the second unit has been fine. Hopefully just a bad batch though volume:on/off switches have never been very reliable in any appliances; why makers persist with them I don't know.Update March 2019- we’ve had two, both where the on/off buttons wore out. Shame, as the radio itself is good, but I can’t recommend

the sound he says is great and the stereo sound is great
for my partner this was a god send it was a companion for him as he is house bound and is a communication for him to keep in touch with the local community. its uses a lot of batteries but has a ac adaptor and that's ok . the sound he says is great and the stereo sound is great. it has improvedhis overall well being and he does not feel so isolated and thanks me for buying him this radio. all i can say is thank you Phillips i never thought that such a product like this would help a person so much . . the only thing he has said to me was why it did not come with a head phone socket and i told him right or wrong that he would not have the same quality sound that this radio produces? apart from that he is really happy with it.

I was aware of the dimensions before purchase but found myself slightly disappointed that it was not physically longer and higher to better be in the spirit of the vintage style Russian radios of the 70's which looked interesting but were far less competent than the radio reviewed. By being a bit bigger there would be space for say 5 pre-set buttons not just 3 and the volume knob could be bigger. Also, for me, I would have preferred a knob for tuning. Also if the wood was not just wood style but a real wood veneer it would be nicer. Finally control of the sound with bass and a treble controls would be desirable. But a very competent radio and as described before purchase.

Dull and muffled at lower volumes
I had a £25 Bush radio that was pretty good. (in a small study) It packed up, so I decided to treat myself and spend a bit more on something higher quality. I would say that at med-high volume in a larger room, this is a decent radio, but at lower volume levels the sound is very dull, with too much bass. This produces a terribly muffled sound. This isn't too much of a problem with music, but if you like to listen to 'spoken' radio (Talk Sport, BBC 2/3/4/5 etc), the results are bad. If you want a clear and crisp radio for spoken radio, then this isn't ideal. Also, the photos show a black display with lovely crisp white lettering on the display, however, mine was a much cheaper light blue display with darker blue lettering, very much like the much cheaper Bush I mentioned above.

... electronics are concerned but the pictures of it are better than the real thing
Looks well made and probably is as far as the electronics are concerned but the pictures of it are better than the real thing. Plastic wood looks plastic and the display is tiny and difficult to read. One thing that is very good (although other reviews say different) is the sound. The sound is excellent, very rich. I would not say don't buy because overall its a competent piece of kit.
