WD 2TB My Cloud Home Personal Cloud

I bought this to replace my old one, well to begin with it was OK, stored loads of photos both locally and in the cloud. I though used to use by previous as a NAS I shortly found out that this is not really a NAS as it stopped for no aparent reason allowing me into the unit. I got in touch with their support who were amazing but could not sort out my problem. After many hours on the Chat and then phone and remote access they asked me to send some data logs. I did this and after three days they said there was one user and it wasnt me. I eventually remembered I had asked a friend to access it so I could send a file. Well eventually I found out that I did have access myself and accessed it locally and got all my data back. I will never use it as a NAS as I was told by WD it is not to be used as one as I should only use it as a BACK up and not a main drive. So to sum up I now have a lovely unit in the corner which will only be used for PLEX as it is good for that unless you want to play 4k films when it doesnt have the correct processors to run them. IT’S SIMPLE – IF YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR VALUABLE DATA, DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE! I run my own technology consultancy business and travel the world with WD portable hard drives in their respective CaseLogic hard cases in my suitcase. They have been all over the world with me in the luggage holds of aircraft travelling to the USA, Europe and beyond. They are reliable, solid and have NEVER let me down. So much so, I now own SIX of them. So, when I saw the WD MyCloud Home, I thought to myself, this would be a great addition to my WD collection, allowing me to use the cloud when travelling, and backing up important business data at home, in the cloud too. As it was, I have just purchased a new MacBook Pro and I needed storage for ALL the data from the HDD of my old MacBook Pro, so this was ideal. It showed up as a mapped drive and could act as a data server. Upon purchase, it was incredibly easy to set up. I plugged it in, set up an account and off I went, loading it with business data, that I could access in the desktop app, in a browser, even on my iPhone or my iPad. Now, trust me, I have run my business for nearly TWENTY years, and I only buy quality equipment with a good reputation. You get what you pay for, as they say, and I thought that paying around £150 for 4TB of storage was a pretty good deal. Not cheap, but then again, not expensive, and I have always held the WD brand is high regard because of their sensible pricing and quality products. That was until 2 days ago, when my WD MyCloud Home simply died. And it died with the entire HDD contents of my older MacBook Pro on it. Luckily, most of that content now resides on my new MacBook Pro, but there were archives in there from older clients, older projects, that I will NEVER get back, which really does piss me off. Yes, I am pissed off about this. Thoroughly pissed off. I have been in touch with WD Support, and Jack has been amazing. Patient, helpful, calling me back. I cannot fault the WD support team, but when they have to tell me that the device has failed and I will never get the data back, I seriously question why WD released the device to market. I was considering putting ALL my family photographs on there last week. If I had done so, I would have lost EVERYTHING, as I would have removed them from the likes of the iPhone, iPad and even the MacBook. The thought of that kind of sentimental loss makes my blood boil. WD are a market leader in data storage. Why, oh why, release a product that does this? Jack from WD Support and I tried EVERYTHING to try to connect to the device. We changed ethernet cables, we connected it directly to my MacBook, all the above, we tried it over a period of about two hours, but nothing. The device won’t power up properly, and when you log in via the WD Discovery app, it just shows as offline, with a message saying the device is offline or rebooting. We tried a hard reset, but again, NOTHING. WD have offered me a replacement device. Sure, that’s great. The existing one is dead, so a new one is due under the warranty. But that WON’T get my data back. Nor will it get my money back from Amazon, as I am now out of the 30-day period. Sure, you might say that I should have another backup. Well, I do. I use iDrive as a cloud-based backup tool, and I also have the majority of the data that was one the WD MyCloud Home on a WD portable hard drive, but it still DOES NOT excuse WD from the fact that this device FAILED and it was less than FOUR MONTHS old! All it has done is sit on the same shelf as my internet router since it was set up. It has not been dropped. It has not been unplugged. IT JUST STOPPED WORKING. So, the warning is right there at the beginning of this review. DO NOT BUY THIS DEVICE! If you have any data you value, DO NOT PUT IT ON ONE OF THESE DEVICES! Period, full stop, end of story. (PS – If there was a ZERO rating for this device, it would have got a big ZERO).

I opted for this as my OLD my book live (3TB) is pretty much full and I like the ability to stream my music, photos and videos on the go. My book live is a discontinued product, so when I saw this 6tb drive for a little over what I paid for my 3tb my book live several years ago, I jumped at the chance. Its a bit of a mixed bag though... The good: - pretty speedy drive. I get 100+MB sustained read and write speeds from the drive. This being attached to a 1Gbps router, I suspect that the drive can achieve faster speeds but is limited by the bandwidth of the router and Cat 5e cable. Compare this to the old My book love, that reaches a peak of around 65MB read speeds and wrote around 34MB - so a massive improvement over that. - The ability to automatically back up from an external media source (be this a USB drive, another WD drive, a cloud service such as Dropbox, Google drive etc). The not so good: - There's no dashboard to log into like the my book live (ie. You would go to the IP address of the drive and you could configure everything from there). - The drive stores your data in different locations depending on how you access the drive. This sounds confusing - what I mean is, if you access the drive through its IP address as opposed to the app/desktop software, then you ant access the media that you saved to it locally from the app/desktop software. And the opposite is true (can't access it locally if it was stored on the drive via the app). Whilst this mat not bother some, it's a BIG issue for me. For example, I stream a lot of media from the drive through my Amazon firestick. There is no app for the Firestick to access the drive, so I have to manually input the driver's IP details into the firestick (VLC player, Kodi etc) to be able to access the media. But that means that I can't access those files on my phone through the app - as they are stored in different locations on the drive. So I've resigned this drive to be a purely home media server, and use my old my book live as one that I can access remotely. For someone that isn't bothered about accessing the drive both locally and remotely - and one or the other will suffice - then this is a brilliant drive. The reason that I've kept a hold of it and not sent it back is because my old drive does what I need it to and use this as a cheapish media server only.

This product is very easy to install and use, ensure you download the WD Discovery app. The support is not so good, you keep getting referred to forums and online standard answers if you get a problem, it seems to be impossible to get a person you are able to explain a problem to. Another thing that is not so good is that encryption tools do not work well with this drive, I encrypt before uploading as problems occur trying to encrypt directly, or if adding files to an encrypted folder. Having said these things, by trial and error I overcame my difficulties and find it the perfect solution for some uses, for those more tech-minded, it is possibly better to buy an old PC and set it up as a server using one of free server apps from the Gnu community. It is a good buy for those wishing a simple solution and who do not trust, or want to pay for an online cloud.

After reading some of the reviews I can say I am more than happy with my purchase, firstly I used One Drive cloud backup which is forever asking me to pay for their service, I decided on a home cloud server and made this purchase. I am now worry free about how much space my pictures are taking up, I have set the WD app on my phone to backup whenever I connect to wifi connection although you can back up every time you take a picture. Each time I come home from work my phone backs up, all family members phones can also back up to their own files, but these are not private to each home user. You can access the images from any device your own including desktop pcs and laptops etc. The only issue is you can upload music and videos etc but you cannot play them directly from the storage device, you need to download a third party app called Plex which wants money and is a pain to work. But to be honest who can stream music over a holiday wifi anyway. For my use this is ideal as I can back up items from my desktop pc aswell.

Review on the 4TB version. My old NAS failed died, and I was looking for a replacement. After some much research I settled on the WD “My Cloud”. But I accidentally purchased this “My Cloud Home” in error. This was a big mistake on my part. This device is perfect if you have no technical ability. Its plug in, set up, download the apps to you computer/tablet and go. If you want to do anything more it’s a pain. You cannot simply map a network drive, and due to the limited settings, this cannot be changed. You are forced to have the app running all the time. It also forces a short cut to your desktop, and if you delete it re-appears next time you restart. The Plex server is very temperamental, in 4 months I have been using it I have had to disable, remove the server and re-set up on several occasions. The streaming is actually fine, and I have had no issues. I decided to purchase a new NAS this weekend, and have taken the drive out. This was a difficult process. WD defiantly does not want this to be user serviceable, even if you have the technical knowledge. Screws are hidden under rubber feet, the plastic pins just snap as you open it up, and its generally very difficult. The HD included is a WD Red, which is perfect for the new NAS enclosure. If you have no technical knowledge and want an easy solution, then this is perfect, and actually good value for money. The drive alone is around £80-£100 (prices fluctuate, and vary where you purchase), so an extra £35-55.00 for the NAS enclosure is very reasonable. Not something I would ever buy again for myself, but I have re-used this for my elderly mother with a lower capacity drive I already had for a simple time-machine back up for her mac. For some reason the time-machine back-up requires no log in or software to be downloaded, and just worked.

We bought this after I pressed a button on my MacBook and EVERYTHING disappeared! It was a very scary 5 minutes before it all returned as it was!! This amazing bit of tech has proved brilliant for us! Super simple to set it up. I didn't do this, but it took my other half about 20 minutes. All phones and tablets now have a back up stored safe! My other half especially likes it as all his music has now been backed up and he can listen to it from the cloud on his phone in the van without it clogging up storage on his phone. I like it because it has all of my documents and photos stored safely away. It's like having your very own personal cloud. The only thing I would say is slightly a pain, if I was being really picky, and that would be having to save everything twice. So I can hit save on my MacBook, but I then have to go in the cloud, add the file and delete the old one. There may be a quicker way, but I haven't found it yet and it's likely me being anal having to save everything each time I do it, rather than a monthly or weekly back up! But I would definitely recommend this! Does everything it says it will and definitely puts my mind at ease knowing everything is safe!

Cosa mi è piaciuto: Configurazione semplice: L’installazione è guidata dall’app WD My Cloud Home, e in pochi minuti il dispositivo è pronto all’uso, anche per chi non è esperto. Accesso remoto intuitivo: Posso accedere ai miei file da qualsiasi dispositivo e luogo, tramite app o browser, senza dover configurare complicate VPN o indirizzi IP. Capacità ampia e scalabile: I 4TB permettono di archiviare migliaia di foto in alta risoluzione, video in 4K e backup di più dispositivi senza preoccupazioni. Backup automatico: È possibile programmare backup automatici dai PC e dai dispositivi mobili, così non si rischia di perdere dati importanti. Condivisione semplice: Posso creare link condivisibili per amici o colleghi senza far accedere direttamente al mio cloud personale. Cosa migliorerei: Velocità di trasferimento: Nonostante la connessione Ethernet, il trasferimento di file molto grandi a volte risulta un po’ lento, soprattutto in upload remoto. Considerazioni finali: Il WD My Cloud Home 4TB è un’ottima soluzione per chi desidera un cloud personale semplice da usare, senza complicazioni e con una buona capacità di archiviazione. Perfetto per famiglie, fotografi amatoriali e chi vuole tenere sotto controllo i propri dati senza ricorrere a servizi esterni a pagamento.

I needed to replace my 10year old Aldi NAS whose disk was dying. I was expecting to have more space and faster transfers, I wasn’t expecting to have a UI more severely limited than that of the basic Aldi NAS. For example it is not even possible to rename the device! Only one top level password protected share can be created. When a password protected share is created it’s not possible to access the public share from the app. I kept it since my primary use for sharing files between my Windows boxes and the unix/android based tv boxes and it works ok for this.
