Can the blade brands be interchanged?

You should be able to find blades that work. I think these are a universal size.

Can the blade be locked into an open position? I'm worried about having to squeeze it while pressing down with the arthritis in my hands.

The purple cutter is easy to use, I also have arthritis. The plastic is flimsy and cheap. The small one has a very bad design. I am afraid my finger will slip while opening the blade and I will cut myself. Wish I had spent my money on better qyality.

What are the 12 rubber disc for?

12 rubber disc's? Do you mean the steel blades? I didn't have anything that was rubber. Depending on how you use the disc's, they do last awhile. When they get dull, they cut nothing. I loved this kit. I've had it for a while now, and I use it all the time. You'll appreciate the extra blades.

Will this cut thin wood

Dear Deborah A. Jourdain, This rotary cutter set is not really for cutting thin wood.We tried them to cut thin soft wood for several times and cutters did work. But we don't think the blade would last long if you are using it exclusively for cutting wood or other hard materials.It would be ok if you apply for softer materials : ) Thank you very much for your question : )
