With a claim to being the defining pop cultural phenomenon of the 1990s--hip, fast, sharp and primary--there was nothing even in rock & roll to match this. The Simpsons is possibly the greatest sitcom ever made. Although the animation was initially primitive, never before had cartoon characters been so well drawn. There had been loveable middle-aged layabouts on TV before, but Homer Simpson successfully stole their crown and out-slobbed them all in every department ("The guys at the plant are gonna have a field day with this," he grumbles in "Call of The Simpsons" as he watches scientists on a TV news item who can't decide whether he is incredibly dense or a brilliant beast). However, in this first series he isn't quite yet the bloated man-child he would become in later series; instead he's a growling patriarch with a Walter Matthau-type voice. His sensible half Marge's croak, meanwhile, has yet to settle down, while the vast cast of minor Springfield characters have yet to find their place. Bart, however, was a smash from the start: dumb as Homer but spiky-haired and resourceful, he sets out his manifesto in "Bart the Genius"; while "Moaning Lisa" spotlights his over-achieving sister and is a good early example of the series' clever handling of melancholy bass notes. Throughout its life there's always been confusion as to whether The Simpsons is a show for kids or adults, but with allusions in these first 13 episodes to Kubrick, Diane Arbus, Citizen Kane and (in a very satisfyingly anti-French episode) Manon des Sources, it should already have been clear that this was a programme for all ages and all IQs from 0 to 200. Dysfunctional they may have been, but the Simpsons stuck together, and audiences stuck with them into the 21st century. --David StubbsOn the DVD: The packaging is good but the 13 episodes are spread very thinly here, with just five each on discs one and two . The commentary track is intermittently interesting though a tad repetitive, as creator David Groening is joined by various other members of the team. The third disc has some neat extra stuff, including outtakes, the original Tracey Ullman Show shorts and a five-minute BBC documentary, but is again fairly brief. The menu interfaces are pretty clunky, annoyingly forcing you to watch endless copyright warnings after each episode and with no facility to "play all". The content is wonderful, of course, but three discs looks like overkill. --Mark Walker Review: Buy it if you love the Simpsons - Great quality and great season. One of the best special features is the commentary on every episode Review: The simpsons - Funny

The Simpsons: Season 1
17th December, 1989, The Simpsons family hit TV screens, and have become one of the most famous families in the world. Season 1 is one of my personal favourites, as I believe the old seasons are much better then the new seasons. There are 13 classic episodes, packed with extras including the short on the Tracy Ullman show, that got them on TV. The episodes include: 1. Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire: No money for presents means Homer results to greyhound racing, ending with a loving present for the family to share. (Notes) Patty, Selma, Ned & Todd Flanders, Santa's Little Helper introduced. 2. Bart The Genius: Bart swaps tests with Martin, and ends up in a school for genius, thus gaining love and respect from Homer, will Bart reveal the lie? 3. Homer's Odyssey: Homer gets fired from his job and sets out to make Springfield a healthy and safe environment. (Notes) Montgomery Burns and Smithers introduced. 4. There's No Disgrace Like Home: After judging his family at a work BBQ, Homer decdes the family needs therapy. (Notes) First scenes of Itchy and Scratchy. 5. Bart The General: Bart gets help from Granpa to even the score with his bully, Nelson. (Notes) Grampa Simpson is introduced. 6. Moaning Lisa: Lisa is sad and is befriended by "Bleeding Gums" Murphy who they both share a similar musical hobby. 7. Call Of The Simpsons: Homer buys an RV to show off to Flanders, but their holiday ends in a mess and The Simpsons must meet with nature itself. (Notes) Guest voice - Albert Brooks. 8. The Telltale Head: Bart Simpson, confesses about how he took the head of Springfield's loved founder to gain friends. (Notes)Krusty and Sideshow Bob cameo, Rev. Lovejoy introduced. 9. Life On The Fast Lane: Homer's selfish ways gets Marge a birthday present, that was meant for him, a bowling ball. S Marge taks up bowing and meets a French trainer, who wants more then to teach Marge how to strike. (Notes) Helen Lovejoy introduced, Guest voice - Albert Brooks. 10. Homer's Night Out: A stag due, ends with Homer bellydancing with another woman, caught on camera by Bart who gives it out to everyone, ending in Marge's hands. (Notes) Guest voice - Sam McMurray. 11. The Crepes Of Wrath: The school has a foreign exchange, and Bart goes to France and istreated like a slave, whilst an Albania boy contains a secret when giving and recieving love from Homer. 12. Krusty Gets Busted: Krusty The Clown is arrested, but one erson wants to prove is innocence, Bart. (Notes) Guest voice - Kelsey Grammer. 13. Some Enchanted Evening: Homer and Marge make up their marriage with a night out, and leave a babysitter with the children, but they do not know, that she is the Babysitter Bandit. (Notes) Guest voice - Penny Marshall. Overall this season is a very good one, and set The Simpsons up with more fame and glory.

Eat my shorts!
It's not one of the best seasons but it's a good way to start the show. Simpsons roasting on a open fire: it's beginning to be a very dull Christmas for the Simpsons. Bart the genius: Bart cheats on a test and everyone thinks he's smart. Homers odyssey: homer tries to get his job back. There's no disgrace like home: homer tries to make the family normal. Bart the general: Bart gets revenge on the school bully. Moaning Lisa: Lisa fells upset till she meets bleeding gums. Call of the Simpsons: the family gets lost in the jungle and homer is mistaken for bigfoot. The telltale head: Bart steals the head off a statue. Life on the fast lane: Marge meets a man who's really good at bowling. Homers night out: Bart takes a picture of homer with another woman. The crepes of wrath: Bart goes to France and has a very bad time. Krusty gets busted: krusty gets framed by ********* ***. Some enchanted evening: the kids get babysitted by a criminal. Good night: Homer & Marge scare the kids before they go to bed. Not an actual episode, just a minute and a half short that you can find on the special features.

Four Onion Rings!!!!!
While watching the more recent episodes of The Simpsons, I found myself craving that "old" Simpsons look. I know, it's crazy, right?....Wrong. Crude animation and Walter Matthau impressions aside, this box set is essential when it comes to The Simpsons. This season, obviously, is where it all started. Fresh from the Tracy Ullman show, The Simpsons dared to extend their episodes to a whopping 21 odd minutes, offering audiences the chance to stare at these incredibly yellow beings for even longer than before. Many viewers will highlight this season (and probably the second, too) as the one that didn't really didn't hit all targets, with regard to laugh-out-loud comedy. This is very understandable, as the show started off on a satire trip, which in later seasons evolved into just plain genius comedy. You can really tell in this season that the writers were really just finding their ground. I must say though, it's quite relaxing to watch these episodes of The Simpsons, as there seems to be less "in your face" content. You can really just sink into the world of this wonderful family, rather than feeling you are a fly on the wall, just dying for the next gag. It seems that the modern Simpsons episodes have A, B, C, D, and quite possibly E stories, whereas most of these old episodes are lucky to have a B story. One more ingredient that makes this season just so so different. All in all, I'm going to quit my yammering for now. Just one last note. Buy this box set, it won't disappoint.

Excellent condition
Good quality DVD box set. Used but in excellent condition—actually better than expected—- and very reasonably priced. Delivered much earlier than advertised which was another bonus. Overall, an unofficial rating of: fantastic! It’s an early season Simpsons box set so unless you’ve been living on the moon for the last 30 years you know exactly what to expect. For my money the early seasons are far superior to the newer offerings. The satire, the “send-ups” and the jokes all hit their marks with greater frequency and even many years after their first airing still very funny and consistently entertaining. Perhaps the animation quality isn’t up to the standard we’ve all come to expect from modern productions but I first watched these episodes as a surly teenager and I’m now in my late forties so for me that’s part of the nostalgic charm.

I was one of those fans who watched The Simpsons from the very start; back in those days, even at college, all we had were rabbit ears to pick up the less than clear local Fox station - some folks back then, in 1989, still did not even have a local Fox station. Things have changed a whole lot since the thirteen-episode first season of this classic comedy, but in many ways The Simpsons has not. As I write this, the show's still going strong and building upon the work done all those years ago. While there was a bit of experimentation back in the early days, the characters emerged fully formed from the very first show. It's quite a treat to be able to watch these first thirteen episodes in order again and to reflect back upon the controversy and instant impact this animated show immediately made on popular culture. I was amazed at how vibrant and familiar these first shows seemed; it seems like only yesterday that I was introduced to Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, and all the denizens of Springfield. Every episode here is a classic. Watching There's No Disgrace Like Home, the third episode, I was unexpectedly taken back to the very beginning of Simpsons mania as I watched the Simpsons repeatedly administer shocks to themselves to the consternation of family therapist Marvin Monroe. And who could forget the terrible ordeal Bart endured at the hands of two French cretins (or little Adil Hoxha, foreign exchange student from Albania - a legend in the lore of Simpsons trivia) in The Crepes of Wrath. In terms of pure hilarity, look no farther than Homer's Night Out, in which Homer becomes the swingingest swinger in town and elicits a plea for help in the ladies' department from none other than Mr. Skinner himself. The first memorable guest performers also lended their special magic to the show early on: Penny Marshall as the baby-sitting bandit in Some Enchanted Evening, Kelsey Grammer as Sideshow Bob in Krusty Gets Busted, and Albert Brooks as the RV salesman in Call of the Simpsons and Jacque, Marge's French admirer and bowling instructor in Life On the Fast Lane. I could write a paragraph about every single episode, as each one is a classic. The commentary for each episode is fabulous, as a whole gaggle of the geniuses who brought the show to life come together to laugh at the best bits, talk about the show's genesis and evolution during this experimental first season, and provide fans with all kinds of trivia and juicy tidbits about the whole Simpsons phenomenon. You can clearly see the show develop with each passing episode, particularly in terms of the level of detail in the animation and, to some degree, the voices. With the help of the commentaries, you get a whole new perspective on Homer and the gang. One can't help but be impressed by the way each character was developed early on, the chemistry that quickly emerged between all the characters, and the way in which serious issues were explored in such a comedic manner. Gosh, you had Marge and Homer's marriage on the rocks in a couple of episodes, Bart's deportation to France for his excessive shenanigans at school, the capture of Bart and Lisa by a wanted criminal, the framing and imprisonment of Krusty, the problem of illiteracy, etc. This show really had it all, right from the very start. I don't know why I waited so long to add The Simpsons Season One to my DVD collection, but I can't wait to get all of the seasons on DVD. After 15+ years, it's easy to take this show for granted, but this Season One DVD with all of its extras has reawakened my old passion for this incredible television show. Speaking of extras, you get a look here at the first animated version of the show, and it's just as horrible as Matt Groening and the other Simpsons bigwigs said it was. You have to see it to believe it. After seeing that, you realize more than ever how lucky we are to have The Simpsons in our lives.

DOH! Why didn't I order these years ago? But MMMmmmmmm... Simpsons BEST! I'm so glad to be watching them now that I have them. I watch one every day or two, and I've moved through four entire seasons and a smattering single episodes in some of the other seasons. I've seen the ones that once made me laugh till I fell off my chair. Now, my chair has arms, and it prevents me from falling out, but I'm still laughing all the way. This is the humor that changed animation and made us ask "wow... can they do that on TV?" I've read criticism of the boxes, the packaging, the disks, the inserts, the format, and the Simpsons in general, but when these arrived I realized that either those people got something else or they're probably annoyingly picky about trivial matters. I'm not here to buy the slickest DVD boxes, though these look like they'd be contenders for the title. I think the inserts are creative, fun, and informative, but again, I'm not here for those. I'm here for what's on these DVDs, and I couldn't be happier with what they've provided us. Commentary, deleted scenes, stills, advertising, and extras unique to each season, this set has everything I want, and probably a lot more features than I'll ever have time to watch (but I'm trying). One packaging caveat: each box had a printed sheet attached to the back with those sticky-dots. I didn't like that they made the boxes feel cheap, so I carefully pulled them off and rolled off the sticky-dots. I folded the printed sheets and stored them inside with the other inserts within each season's box. What lay beneath those attached backs is FAR more attractive, and the boxes now feel worthy of displaying where visitors can pick them up and look. I'm just a few years younger than Matt Groening, and I was a big fan of Life In Hell, his alternative weeklies strip long before the Simpsons ever aired. For many years I avoided The Simpsons, thinking it was a "Flintstones" version of Life in Hell. When I finally watched it, I was instantly hooked for life. Now I'm seeing all the shows that I missed. Not having a TV, I've seen almost all my Simpsons episodes on YouTube or iTunes, with a season or two that I saw with my kids back when we had a TV, before I said "no more TV" and kicked it out. That leaves a lot of these 9 seasons which are totally new to me. This is great! The image is clear and the colors true. The format fills the height of my monitor, but of course is not as wide. I don't know the exact ratio of these, but it's the one that appears most natural on my Apple Cinema Display. Sound is true to the original. I'm not a DVD connoisseur, but I'm pretty critical of movies and content; these DVDs have made me happy every time I've watched. I'm so glad to finally have all these seasons!
